I've always wanted to watch the England team play soccer, & 2 years ago I went to Bloemfontein to watch England vs Germany in the world cup, England were useless & were thumped 4-1, but just to be there & sing 'God Save the Queen' with 50000 fans was worth it. :y16:

I agree - when the full stadium stands for the anthems, it's enough to give you chills! Hearing Flower of Scotland at Murrayfield for a rugby match was the absolute tops for me - still get chills thinking about it!

Yeah, but they had a goal disallowed.

How 'bout this girl who messes up the words to the Star Spangled Banner? She stops and goes inside to get the words on paper, then slips on the ice and falls down when she returns. Hey...guess what? ICE IS SLIPPERY!

Oh brother Seeker, that was really over the top :y13: I couldn't take it to the end.
A very talented lady for sure, but that was a bit agonizing to endure.
I wish anthem singers would just sing it, sing it straight as was intended, and leave it at that.
When they start putting their own spin on the song and drag it out, that really bugs me.
Maybe they think a talent scout from Hollywood is watching :y2:
Frankly, it is her selection of tempi that renders these performances unlistenable. Her voice is reasonably well trained. Her intonation in several places, is shaky.

Like Carl, I believe that the Ray Charles version of "America the Beautiful" ought to be the national anthem, but, unfortunately, it just wouldn't sound the same if anyone else was singing it.

I seem to remember Aretha Franklin forgetting the words to the SSB at the Democratic National Convention in (I think) 1968 or 72. It can happen, though it shouldn't.

BTW, the SSB is a notoriously difficult song to sing, covering as it does an octave and a quarter.

lol Shame poor girl she really made a mess of it all. :y10:

You would think any organization getting any one to sing something as important as this would first screen them and actually listen to it first

Since the US and Canada are joined at the hip we get to hear our respective anthems all the time.
I like "America The Beautiful" much better than the SSB, just as I like "The Maple Leaf Forever" much better than O Canada.
Oh well, "they" didn't ask us did they :y15:

Personally, if you only do the instrumental of the Star Spangled Banner, I think it sounds much more like an Anthem than does America Te Beautiful.

America the Beautiful would also annoy Atheists with it's reference to God (they complain about In God We Trust on our money and our Pledge of Allegiance already!) whereas the SSB doesn't have any.

No they didn't; we didn't get to vote!
