I had this happen a few years ago. The HD was toast and I lost a lot of pictures.
Other than the inconvenience of rebuilding all my links, the pictures were the most valuable.
Fortunately, I had most of them on a CD or in photo albums, but I still lost many.
My new PC had an external HD.

I think it was the motherboard that went on my one but it was giving problems for some time now. I was doing daily backup so I have not lost any of my data but it is always a mission to setup a new PC and it looks like my new one might only be here by next week Friday. They have to order all the bits as it is a custom build that I am doing for my one.

BGRIN I don't know enough to custom build a PC. I take what's on the shelf and get a professional to set it up for me.
There is a repair shop around the corner from me who are good and have reasonable fees.
Give me a wrench and I'll tear into a motorcycle engine, but I seem to have a mental block when it comes to technology FACE
I guess we all have our certain aptitudes.
It was quite a steep learning curve to learn W10, but not as bad as I had expected.
I still don't have much technical knowledge, but I'm getting along with W10 very well.
The new HP PC I bought in 2013 seems to be performing very well and has gobs of memory.

Even being in the PC industry I am getting them to put the PC together for me well worth the small cost, so when I get it home I am ready to start the long job of installing and tweaking all the software, this can take days to get it back to how my old one was setup.
