My 1970 TR6R has a problem when shifting from first gear to second gear. The problem is intermittent and happens at different RPM's. Suggestions??

A thorough maintenance, with inspection of wear parts for excessive wear and/or out-of-true condition, then a full clutch adjustment by the book may cure your problems with zero new parts.

(I see we have been riding the same number of years, nice coincidence)

Most importantly, I see you are a Blue Star Family. Tango Yankee to you and your Soldier. Thanks for the reply. The bike has not been ridden much for many years, it has less than 14,000 original miles on it. It doesn't jump out of gear, so may I assume the problem isn't with the dog? There is a new Barnett clutch in it and I have adjusted the clutch according to the shop manual. This leaves me (I know less than you.) with suspecting an indexing issue. How would I be able to determine an issue with any of the indexing parts? Oh yes, I've heard the 'they all do that' from others who've owned 650 four speed Triumphs.

Okay, so did this problem appear right after installing the new clutch? Indicates improper installation and/or adjustment if that is the case.

You state at first the transmission has a problem, but you do not specify WHAT problem. (only that it occurs between first and second)

Then, you state that it doesn't jump out of gear, eliminating one of many possible problems.

So, what is the EXACT problem? Does if jam? Stays in previous gear and won't change? Won't change up, or down? Both?

I'll pass along your thanx to our son who is headed to Germany in December for 2 or (hopefully) 3 years along with his entire family, car, motorcycle, dishes, TV, and dogs.

The problem is that it won't change up. This doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen no matter what the RPM's are. This problem has existed for many years, long before the new clutch was put in.
I am a Vietnam Vet, 3rd BDE, 25th ID, 1968. Please tell your son that many of my friends that I visit with at 22nd Infantry Regiment Society reunions would have died in Vietnam without Medivacs.
Once your son and family are settled in, you can take one of those motorcycle tours of the Alps that I've read about in Cycle World.

You might want to pull the gear cluster assembly and inspect each and every part. Sounds like something's worn out.

My son's influence was my very good friend Stuart that flew Jolly Green Giant Sikorskys in 'Nam. His was the second-most decorated SAR chopper in the theater's history, and sits at the Air Force Museum in Columbus in a relatively new section of the facility. Stuart & his crew once collected FOUR downed pilots in ONE DAY, a record. His flight engineer earned the Silver Cross for that day's heroics. My son has been hearing these stories all his life since the week after he was born; that was bound to have some effect.

By the way, the reason they didn't restore the MOST decorated Jolly Green for the museum, was that it was totally destroyed! (crew survived, and were present at the commissioning of the exhibit)

OK, I'll follow your advice and pull the entire gear set out and look for anything that is worn. I haven't checked the shop manual, but assume that clearances are posted.

No Jolly Greens where we were, inland, Cambodian border. However, I am aware of the heroics performed by those that flew and crewed them. The accolades are very late in coming. Good to know that your friend, Stuart, and his friends have been recognized.

As for the shifting problem, is the gear lever returning to the correct (neutral) position every time, it could be an issue with the springs or gear lever sticking, but this would normally be an issue between 2/3/4 changes as the lever is going up each time.
