Well I've had my '04 Bonnie for about a month now and have been removing years of grime & dirt, cleaning, polishing, new brake pads, oil / filter change, air filter, resolved a few vacuum leaks, new spark plugs, and now the bike is running great except....... it will not start with the starter button (it was like this when I bought it). I have a simple push button wired directly to the large poles on the starter solenoid and this works just fine but I'd like to be able to use the starter button.

So far I've determined what it's NOT and now I'm sending out an SOS to you all. I've installed a new starter solenoid, the headlight dims dramatically when the starter button is pressed (which I believe tells me power is getting to the button), the contacts at the back of the starter button have continuity when it's pressed, the clutch safety switch has been cleaned and tested at the plug housing in the headlight and is functional (has continuity) and same with the kickstand safety switch, the idiot neutral light works so I'm thinking its not the neutral safety switch. I've tested the small black wires going to the small leads on the starter solenoid with a simple bulb / wires and there is not power getting to the them so the solenoid cannot engage and fire the starter motor. Please keep in mind that I'm very much a novice and I'm learning as I go with help from forums and lots of YouTube videos, so pretend you're talking to a drunk monkey o_O On the upside, I've been able to increase my beer consumption while working in my garage listening to some awesome tunes!

Hi Matt have a look at the wiring loom were it comes up round the head stock and check its not been pinched or rubbed any were as this may cause a short in the wiring , also check all of the wiring loom connectors for rusty or dirty connections .
let me know how you get on !!

was going to mention clutch + sidestand safety switches if you have them. glad you got it as electrics are my weak point + can be hard to find
