I've had better weekends

Well I can say that I've had better weekends but Farside has definitely had better weekends. About a week ago, he was bitten by a spider on his leg - told him to go to the doctor but oh no, you macho men. Finally goes to the doctor and she says it's a tick bite. Tick bites go black within a day, this didn't; I told him that I thought it was a Violin spider bite AGAIN!!!

So today the pain was unbearable and the fever high so we go to the hospital - Farside's been admitted and on IV anti-biotic/toxins - if that doesn't help by tomorrow, the surgeon will have to cut the area out. Violin spider bites are seriously nasty things - last year he was bitten on his arm and now the leg. Have no idea why he's the only person in the house that gets bitten - maybe he's sweet and I'm just a sour old duck?? (Don't answer that.) I'm just glad he's getting the right attention.

And then the vet phoned to tell me that my bestest, biggest bully boss cat, Gromit, (yes, my namesake) has cancer in his mouth - it's squamous so it can't be treated. Just giving him cortisone to help him through.

It's just not been a great Saturday SAD

Shame man this all sucks give Farside all our best and hope the meds work for him. I have also been hit by one of those spiders and had a huge creator in my leg they had to cut it all out.

Sorry to hear about your namesake. It can be hard to watch an old friend that has such as him. Hopefully his pain and discomfort can be managed.

Oh and Farside's too.

Is a violin spider kin too what we call a fiddleback or brown recluse ( Loxosceles reclusa)? Those are some nasty spiders.

That's one nasty family. I knew with what y'all said about the bite it was just as we see in the fiddleback so I was pretty sure they were either the same or close relatives.

Sorry to hear about the misfortunes.
I had a cat that developed cancer and had to be put down.
After 16 years they are like one of your children.
Here in the frozen north we don't have any spiders like that or snakes can kill you.
We do have wood tics that burrow under the skin and can cause serious problems.
They live in the forests and as you walk through the brush they can get on you as well as dogs and cats.

I am also sorry to hear about the misfortunes.
On the canary islands we have not this spiders.
We have also a little cat, named Bonnie and she is 6 months. I can feel with all.

Thanks guys - Farside's being operated on at the moment - I just hope they don't have to cut too much away. I'll probably be allowed to bring him home later today. And then I'll be the grumpy ugly nurse :y2:

The violin is a relative of the fiddle back and brown recluse. It's one of the meanest, nastiest little critters around and because the toxin is a necrosis type, the damage can be severe. Which is why I'm so hacked off with his doctor for the misdiagnosis in the first place. Particularly since he had the same bite last year which she treated. Anyway, what's done is done and now it's being sorted.

For my Grommy boy, I don't know what to do. He's such a character - bosses the dogs around, a labrador and a ridge-back. The labrador actually whimpers if Gromit is in a doorway he wants to go through. Grommy rules our lives with his little furry paw. I can't face losing another pet but I also don't want him to suffer.

Thanks for the support everyone - really helps and means a lot to us!

FS is good - got his colour back, no fever, no headache - much much better! Even walking better! He's gone to work this morning but will come home around lunch time and rest up. He checked himself out of hospital without the surgeon's OK but that's FS. Will speak to the surgeon today about follow-up appointments etc.

I think I aged about 10 years this weekend but all's well - THANK YOU TO EVERYONE HERE FOR YOUR CONCERN AND SUPPORT - WE BOTH APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH!

I have Silli and found nothing. But I did get an email from the Gauteng Health Dept stating that Jhb has an infestation of violin spiders due to the heat, rain, heat, rain conditions that we've been experiencing.

But I am going to empty the bedroom completely and have it sprayed just to be on the safe side!

a bit like me and hospitals huh
slow in and fast out.
I can certainly relate.
Give him my best

Devo, he's literally phobic about being in hospital. At the same time as he was checking himself out, I had to fetch Liam from a scout camp on the other side of town. I was one block away from the hospital when FS phoned asking where we were. When I turned the corner to hospital, FS was waiting outside on the pavement! He wouldn't even wait in the reception area for us!!! That's how bad he is!

I will most certainly give him your best - THANKS!!
