Seems that this one is a big worry for New York

Six states along the east coast of the US, from North Carolina to New York, have declared emergencies ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Irene.

The first hurricane of the Atlantic season is now a category three storm, packing winds of 115mph (185km/h), with "some strengthening" expected.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in parts of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and North Carolina.

Irene, now leaving the Bahamas, has already caused havoc in the Caribbean.

States of emergency have been declared in North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and New York.

I don't know how many members we have on the US east coast, but Seeker comes to mind and is probably going to get thumped by Irene.
Up here, we're concerned too as she will no doubt pass close to us - how close is the question. All we can do is wait.
There was a day when hurricanes were a "Florida thing" or an "American thing", but after Hurricane Juan we don't think that way anymore.

Rocky according to the tracking I am watching should pass you by 318 Miles or so. Looks like it will pass AJ by 320 Miles, but it seems like it will be heading straight through New York.

Yeah, I'm watching the tracking too. 300+ miles isn't much in a hurricane, but I would rather be on the outer edges than nearer the center.
We're thinking (hoping) we willl only get some heavy rain and a bit of wind Sunday night into Monday.
There's no doubt we will get something.
I don't wish any harm on anyone, but if it has to be, rather them than me/us.

Pittsburgh is inland to the West far enough that all we'll get is cloudy skies and probably not even any rain.

Eastern Pennsylvania around Philadelphia will get some nasty rain and some wind, but nothing near full force hurricane winds.

I believe by the time it gets up around Nova Scotia, it will have mellowed quite a bit due to the cooler ocean temperatures and having gone over enough land mass.

Yeah, i don't think a hurricane can make it that far up the eastern coast because the waters are much colder up there. The warm waters (as high as 90 degrees !!!) off florida and down that way are conducive to spawning high category hurricanes, but the waters up north get progressively colder and they die out to a large degree because of that. That i believe is why you don't see cat 5's hitting places like new york. Lucky for the lower states (and our buddy Carl !) this one didn't move over land till it was far enough north to peter out a good bit.

Here in so cal it's a similar situation where our climate doesn't support storms of that nature, yet now and then we'll have a few wimpy tornados that are occasionally strong enough to do some damage to a couple houses, but thats about the worse it gets.

When Ike went thru here in 2008 as a Cat 4 we almost made it thru the north eye wall, the path changed and instead of having the eye pass over us and we then went thru the east eye wall and finally the south eye wall. A coworker 7 miles west of me was in the eye and said from his house they could see stars and what appeared to be the east wall on the horizon.

Well the Gulf Stream does run down the East Coast just off shore and has warmer water than you'd normally expect.

It's great that it weakened, but you cannot blame them for thinking it COULD have stayed powerful and done some major damage to places and people not accustomed to hurricanes.

The wind and rain storm warnings are out for the Maritime provinces as it appears that Irene will pass over the state of Maine and the province of New Brunswick just to the north of us.
A few degrees one way or the other will make a big difference so we're hoping the storm track will stay as predicted.
It looks like the rain will start Sunday morning with the full force of whatever comes will be here Sunday evening/night into Monday morning.
It doesn't look like things will be too bad so we're not too alarmed, but not relaxed either.

"Good night Irene, good night Irene, I'll see you in my nightmares......er......dreams." :y2:

Well, so far I rene has claimed the lives of 9 people :y1:

I heard that too, but of course I don't know the details of why they happened.
It seems to me that if people took reasonable care and caution, and didn't put themselves in harms way (the thrill seekers) the deaths would be needless.
I heard that one guy went surfing and lost his life. That was pretty stupid.
It's just past noon time as I type this and not much happening here yet.
