It is that time of year again and hurricane Fay is threatening to come calling. Fuzzy and Shyguy will feel her affects before we do. We are looking at Wednesday for Central Florida. Hurricane preparations have begun.

Forecasters: Floridians should prepare for hurricane
Saturday, August 16, 2008 4:26 PM EDT
The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) — Florida's governor declared an emergency for the state Saturday due to the threat of Tropical Storm Fay, which forecasters say could bring hurricane-force winds to the Florida Keys as soon as Monday.

Fay could hit as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane, with winds perhaps reaching more than 100 mph, forecasters said, stressing that it was too early to tell how intense the storm would become.

In anticipation, Gov. Charlie Crist declared the emergency to help protect communities from the storm, which "threatens the state of Florida with a major disaster," the executive order said.

Flooding from Fay killed two people and left two children missing in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, authorities said Saturday. Forecasters said the storm could reach hurricane strength when it approaches central Cuba on Sunday, and the government there issued a hurricane watch for several provinces.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that as of 2 p.m. EDT, the storm's center was about 50 miles southeast of Guantanamo, Cuba. It had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. To become a hurricane, sustained winds must be at least 74 mph.

Florida officials said an emergency declaration is a normal procedure. At the same time, state officials in Tallahassee opened the emergency operations center, said Blair Heusdens, a spokeswoman for the state's Division of Emergency Management.

"We like to have the executive order in place before the storm," Heusdens said. "That way we can have our resources ready."

The city of Key West also planned to open its emergency operation center Saturday.

Meteorologist Christopher Juckins said Florida residents should be prepared for a hurricane. A Category 1 has winds from 74-95 mph and a Category 2 has winds from 96-110 mph.

"The official track brings it off the west coast of Florida Tuesday and Wednesday, however, the track is always uncertain and the entire peninsula of Florida needs to pay attention to the storm," said Juckins of the Hurricane Center.

Juckins said if the storm veers to the east, it could pass over the Miami area early Tuesday.

However, if it tracks farther west and remains over the Gulf of Mexico, it would hit landfall farther north and later in the week.

Fay is the sixth storm to form in the Atlantic this season.

We are moved in but not unpacked. We are dealing with straightening up my dad's house - he had some remodeling done - before we can find places to put our junk - er stuff.

I am prepared. I washed Dori's car, my truck, and both bikes. Everything's full of gas. I think we're only gonna get some rain, and not a whole lot of wind. That's exactly what we need.

Fuzzy is right, Florida needs the rain and this one can be a great blessing. It will not be a strong hurricane and maybe will not reach hurricane strength after it passes over Cuba. Looks like Tuesday and Wednesday will not be riding days!!

Fuzzy let me know if you need any help down there for clean up. I can be down there in three hours.

If I do lose power for very long, we will have a huge, I mean huge fish fry. I have about twenty pounds of shrimp and another twenty pounds of snapper and seatrout in the deep freeze. I don't need no lectricity to fry fish and hushpuppies.

From the sound of things now, our friend Pete in Fort Myers will be the one to keep an eye on. It appears that the storm is going to miss the east coast, and swing into the gulf, but....as with all those darn storms....time will tell.

Fuzzy, if you do need any help, just let me know. I am not far away, and will be more than happy to assist with anything, but I agree with you....I think we both will get some more of the much needed rain, and maybe a bit of wind, but don't expect anything too bad. I am prepared, just like you.......Gotta do what ya gotta do with these storms.

Latest revised forecasts don't look good for us here in The Big Bend area. Looks like it could strengthen as it moves north just off the west coast. Wife is out buying water right now, and I need to finally rig up my generator. Haven't needed it for the past 2 years.

The 23:00 advisory has Fay taking aim on the Tampa Bay area. We are all hoping she will bring us much needed rain without the destructive winds.

We have earthquakes here in California, but i'm not sure i'd wanna trade. I might feel different if you ask me in the middle of a big one tho ! :) Just had one about 2 weeks ago, and i'm on the second floor of a very old 3 story brick building at work. You can believe I was out the door in record time.

Good luck to you all. Carl...batten down the bonnie ! :)

Thanks Dale; Bonnie is secured. I have secured most everything here. I have to take Mae Lyne's hanging plants down and set them on ground and put the garbage cans up. That will complete our preparations. Actually, it won't bad; they are predicting 40 mph (64.4 Kph). We have thuderstorms with winds worse than that. The real danger is tornadoes; This things have a habit of spawning twisters.

It looks like Ft Myers on the west coast will bear the brunt of the storm. Faye is taking dead aim on that area. The good news is she probably will not pick up enough strength to gain hurricane status. Right now she is over Key West with sustained winds of 60 mph (96.6 kph). Tomorrow and Wednesday will not be riding days.

Daz, I'll take a hurricane any day. I spent 2 1/2 years in Northern Japan and we had a shakey about every four months. At least you can hide during a hurricane. In a shakey, hidin' does no good. Our ops building was on a cushion of asphalt and was considered "earthquake proof." It was so stable we had to hang "shakey indicators" from the ceiling to let us know when one occurred. A "shakey indicator" is a grease pencil hung from the ceiling by a piece of light string. Seriously. Actually, sometimes it was a beer bottle on a table in the NCO Club.

We should be fine during this storm. I hope we get some rain for the Big O.

Well, i suppose if it's a big one i'd have to think about it. But living here all my life and having been thru 2 big ones and a handful of small ones i'm ok with them now. My worry is THE big one. If that happens i'll happily take hurricanes and tornados. Especially if it happens while i'm in that old brick building i work in ! :oh:

Watched the havoc Fay has wreaked in Cuba and Haiti - I really hope she looses some of her force by the time she hits Florida. Like Dave said, we don't really have extreme weather here. Occassional floods due to rain, occassional high force winds on the Cape Coast and rare monster spring tides, but it's nothing like the quakes, tornados and hurricanes you guys have. Batton down the hatches and stay safe!
