Well, it's been an interesting few days to say the least. Earl veered right over us and gave us a good hammering. More than 200 thousand lost power including me, but it was only for 36 hours compared to Hurricane Juan when it was six days.
Lots of tree damage around the city and I lost another huge maple tree. It fell across my yard at an angle and missed the garage and house. It was an old tree and as I cut into it I saw that it was starting to rot and weaken and was destined to fall eventually. I've spent the past couple of days cutting it up into manageable pieces for hauling away. Since it's on private property I get no help from the city in disposing of it.
A tree also fell at my cottage and tore the power and telephone lines off, but no damage to any of the buildings. I had to spend some time down there cleaning up. The power company crew were there on Monday to repair the line. I thought that was amazing considering all the work they had to do!
Overall I got off very lucky. Earl hit us as a cat 1 storm and was pretty vicious. Only one storm related death, but the victim put himself in harms way.
My helmet is off the the power company for being so well prepared and to the crews for doing a spectacular job. Lots of lessons were learned by everyone from Hurricane Juan seven years ago.
Thanks for the good thoughts everyone!

Hey Rocky great to see you back we were getting a bit worried. Had a look at your local newspaper online and they had plenty photos and just by looking at these we could see you guys took a betting. Great that you never had any real damage to your buildings :y115:

Great to hear from you, Rocky. I was starting to get a bit concerned. But having been through many of these, I am all too well experienced with the power outages and the massive cleanups - especially when you have two places to clean up.

I am glad you got your power back so quickly. That is great. Here, the power companies have alliances with the power companies in other states. The crews are ready to go and as soon as the winds start dying down, those crews start rolling in while the local crews start working. Everything is all pre-planned.

I am happy to hear that you were blessed and had no structural damage at either place. Glad those trees missed!! Welcome back!! :y115:

Thanks guys, but I don't have a lot of spare time right now. Lots of debris from leaves and small branches still left to clean up. Cutting up the trees creates its own debris. The butt of the maple tree measures just over 60cm (24") so it was a bit of a monster.
The city has relented and is letting us put some of it out for collection so I spent the morning hauling debris to the sidewalk.
I have a hydraulic log splitter (five ton ram) and am using that to split the heavy trunk into manageable pieces.
All this bending, stretching, lifting and sweating is hard on a body. If I didn't know better I was beginning to think that I was getting old
Our sister province of New Brunswick sent down about 30 power company crews to boost the manpower of our power company and they did an amazing job. On occasion NS and NB crews have gone to New England to help in an emergency and the US crews have come up here. It's a great relationship. There is no border between our countries when it comes to helping each other.
All is well here - just still lots of debris to clean up, but the worst is over.
Time for lunch and back at it.

Take it easy Rocky :oh: I cannot imagine this type of destruction from a storm. When we just have a bit of a blow it takes weeks for them to sort it out. Then again I suppose we are not equipped to handle this type of weather.

Who you never :y114:

The old back is giving out so time to call it a day. Rain tomorrow so I'll have a day of rest.
All things considered I hasn't been too much of an ordeal. I just hope we don't get any more of this.
I'm thankful that I can do this physical labor. The fact that I have a steel shoulder doesn't bother me a bit and it's as if the incident never happened. The surrounding muscles are as strong as they ever were so it's really about the muscles, not the steel prosthesis. I can do everything I ever did.
My favorite bike magazine just arrived in the mail and it has an article about a motorcycle tour through the European Alps. I'll check it out and do some dreaming :ya2:
Signing off for the day.

You made an amazing recovery but I still say it is also a state of mind. If you give in then you have lost. So we can then look forward to pics of the Alps next time is it :y114:
