250 years ago today in 1758, British General John Forbes and (then) Colonel George Washington evicted the French troops who had occupied Fort Duquesne at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers. In it's place, they constructed Fort Pitt, named after England’s Sir William Pitt, and officially established the city of Pittsburgh (pronounced Pittsboro). Pittsburgh grew to become The Gateway to the West and has transformed into the Gateway of Innovation with such firsts as: the polio vaccine, advanced organ transplantation, long distance electricity, the 1st gas station, the 1st radio station (KDKA), the 1st TV station, the robot, the Ferris wheel, the movie theater, the Big Mac, and the first Baseball World Series.

Pittsburgh is the reigning #1 Most Livable City in America (rated by Rand McNally) and is the only city to be named #1 twice. It was ranked #2 in most scenic places in America by Places Magazine, and has the lowest crime rate per 1,000 people in America.

Happy 250th Birthday to my hometown! :y18:

Pittsburgh will be rockin' all weekend with tons of activities scheduled including a 2 million dollar fireworks display, free public skating at Mellon Arena, free public viewing of the Pittsburgh Penguins season opening game against the Ottawa Senator (which is being played in Stockholm, Sweden today at 2:30 PM EST), round-the-clock free rock concerts, and the finish line of a bicycle race which traced the route of Forbes and Washington across Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh.

I'm packing up my skates and heading down to Mellon Arena for some skating before and after the Penguin game this afternoon. Then I think I'll grab a Primanti Brothers sandwich, some adult beverage, and find a good place to watch the fireworks.

It's in the 40s today though so riding the Trophy might be out of the question.

Nice going P-burg :y115:

On Thursday my home town of Halifax celebrated the 250th anniversary of the establishment of representative government in Canada - and it all happened for the first time right here in old Halifax town.
We both have a lot to celebrate and be thankful for.

Sounds like a great way to enjoy a birthday. P..burgh has always been a cool place.

Enjoy, everyone. :y18:

Carl, it may have been sunny for you today, but I picked up my new Tiger and rode coast to coast through several rainstorms, but they did not dampen my day....it was a great ride, and now my Tiger is home safe and sound.

Bob, how do you like the Tiger? Photos, please.

It was a beautiful day here. Mae Lyne and I took a 78 mile ride through the back country of eastern Seminole County. Except for the St Johns basin, that country has really changed since I left in 1964. But there are still some good back roads.

Sorry about that seeker. I know better and have no excuse.
My apologies to all Pittsburgher's.

Many Pittsburghers are touchy about that, but I'm not. It's no biggie...LOL!

Gary...is that the place they put up the wild outdoor signs? I think it's out near the North Versailles area.
