I always turn mine off before I shut it down so that it does not leave a large amount of gas in the carburetors. I found that if I do this in that order it starts easier the next time. There may be nothing to this but I have always done this. I have heard some horrific stories like flooding and gas leaking all over the place aor ending up in the sump, filter box, in the exhaust, etc. I just do it out of habit. I am not sure if this is the case on the newer FI models.

Glenn, back in the day if a float stuck, you could have a whole tank of gas on the floor/concrete/ground. It has happened to me. I don't think that is the case with newer carbed bikes and definitley not with EFI bikes. But like you, I turn mine off out of long years of habit.

If your bike has one, then it's there for a reason....use it!

I always shut off the gas on my bikes that have petcocks....even if I'm only going to be 10 minutes.

I have to admit though that the 1996 Trophy's vacuum shut off is very nice and always works. With 4 carbs, I feel better knowing it's off too.
