I have just fitted a Norton external oil filter to my Triumph T140v and the filter brand is EMGO part #10-07700.
I have contacted the supplier in the UK and they said I should use that particular filter as it has a very low resistance to the oil flow, so there is no chance of too much oil in the sump.
I would like to buy filters locally (Australia) but I don't want to cause any problems with the bike. Does anyone have any suggestions on what other filters I could use taking the size into consideration 3.2x3.2x3.2 inches.

Thanks in advance Leigh

To Carl's point, and a fact not understood in today's society:

Classic Triumphs were designed with regular/routine maintenance in mind (as are all modern vehicles); HOWEVER, they were also designed with regular MAJOR SERVICING (overhaul) in mind. Evidence the sludge tube form of sediment trap inside the crankshaft. It was a GIVEN that at certain milestones, the engine's top end would be pulled apart for "de-coking", and at further intervals, it would be taken down to the crank to replace the sacrificial rod big end bearings and clean the sediment trap. Typically, the max usage before major service would be about 20,000 miles. While servicing the engine, the owner would also attend to freshening the brakes and suspension. After all was done, the bike was essentially renewed and ready to clock up 20K more miles.

Modern bikes have no such design, and major service isn't required until the bike is virtually worthless (planned obsolescence). Time to buy a new bike!

GP is absolutely right, that's the way it was done in the good (bad) old days and pretty well how you need to do it today if you ride the old bikes to high mileages.
When I restored my T100S back in 1995, I tore the engine down and did all the things GP said. The engine was as clean as a whistle, and while I was in there, I installed a Morgo oil pump. It was probably not needed, but I was going to install an external oil filter kit so figured it couldn't hurt.
Both British Cycle Supply and Walridge Motors (major parts suppliers in Canada) offer the kits now and sell the Champion 101 oil filter cartridge shown below. BCS also sell the Emgo mentioned above.
The 101 is what I use.
