Perhaps someone could make a beefed up reinforcement part for the boss like on the newer Bonneville Twin idler boss reinforcement.
The brass sleeve can be bought. Although an earlier slimmer one would only be feasible otherwise no casting would be left. Then hole would be bored out, and casting warmed up, brass fitted in tightly.

The boss itself is part of the Meriden cast crankcase.

I was thinking of a reinforced part that gets added to the original boss after the hole is bored out and the brass is fitted to increase the wall thickness. Don’t know if it’s necessary in this instance, but it certainly would reduce worry.

That would be excellent. No such thing exists unfortunately. And welding extra thickness wouldn't be that straight forward, asked a Brit-bike engine builder.

On the plus side, a used crankcase is about £200, so not financially ruinous if it cracked. Bit of a bother though.
