The Boxer breed health issues

Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers, heart conditions such as Aortic Stenosis and Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (the so-called "Boxer Cardiomyopathy"), hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy; other conditions that may be seen are gastric dilatation and torsion (bloat), intestinal problems, and allergies (although these may be more related to diet than breed).[22][23] Entropion, a malformation of the eyelid requiring surgical correction, is occasionally seen, and some lines have a tendency toward spondylosis deformans, a fusing of the spine,[24] or dystocia.[25] Other conditions that are less common but occur more often in Boxers than other breeds are hystiocytic ulcerative colitis (sometimes called Boxer colitis), an invasive E. coli infection,[26] and indolent corneal ulcers, often called Boxer eye ulcers.

According to a UK Kennel Club health survey, cancer accounts for 38.5% of Boxer deaths, followed by old age (21.5%), cardiac (6.9%) and gastrointestinal (6.9%) related issues. Average age of death was 9 years and 8 months.[27] Responsible breeders use available tests to screen their breeding stock before breeding, and in some cases throughout the life of the dog, in an attempt to minimize the occurrence of these diseases in future generations.[28]

Boxers are known to be very sensitive to the hypotensive and bradycardiac effects of a commonly-used veterinary sedative, acepromazine.[29] It is recommended that the drug be avoided in the Boxer breed.[30]

As an athletic breed, proper exercise and conditioning is important for the continued health and longevity of the Boxer. Care must be taken not to over-exercise young dogs, as this may damage growing bones; however once mature Boxers can be excellent jogging or running companions. Because of their brachycephalic head, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions.

I have done a lot of research on large breed dogs after my Max died but still have not been able to get another so far. However I think if I were it would be another Boerboel or Bull Mastiff

I like the Bull Mastiff, great dogs. I've never been around a Boerboel and have to admit I've never heard of them before.

I would love to have an American Bulldog but it would be hard to pass up a Bull Mastiff if one was available around here.

I love boxers, but i too had no idea about the health issues till about 4 or 4 months ago when i heard they are like the #1 most problematic dog as health goes. I was surprised. My fav dogs are english and french bulls, the french bull recently taking over the #1 spot in my heart. Funny thing is, i always thought they were the most unhealthy dogs and at one point decided if i ever get a dog it might be a boxer !!! I kid you not. I came to that decision figuring the boxer has a little bit of that smooshed in face that i love so much about the bulls but would be a healthy alternative ! Boy was i wrong, eh?! There happens to be a really cute black and white boxer in a yard i walk by most every day and he is what first got me interested in them. he waits for me to walk by every day and runs over and licks my hand thru the chain link fence. :y2: Now i worry about him after hearing about them.

On the subject of french and english bulls....man, if theres are cuter dogs than those on earth, I ain't seen em.

Now I've read about the Boerboel and like what I read, sounds like a great dog to have around the house or farm.

I've always liked the English Bulldog but they don't do so good with the heat in the Houston area.

Several Boxers in the area. I've heard for years about their health issues, several friends have gone thru the health issues with them and the pain/strain it caused their families.

I had two of them and I sure do miss my Max and it has now been years since he passed. They are really great family dogs but you need to make sure you get them from a good breeder and they would not come cheap your side that is for sure being an import from SA
