Raking your leaves destroys ecosystems. Fallen leaves create a natural layer that butterflies, moths, salamanders, chipmunks, box turtles, toads, shrews, worms, and other species rely on for food and shelter. (Source)

If you’re traveling through the fog and the sun is at your back, you might just see a white rainbow. Fogbows are like rainbows without color. Though rare, they occur in the fog because the water droplets, which would normally form a rainbow, are too small to reflect the light wavelengths that create colors. (Source,...

The original version of Monopoly was actually created in protest of monopolies. The inventor, Elizabeth Magie, believed in a system of shared land value and designed the game as a teaching tool to address the problems and immorality of land monopolies – but she only made about $500 off of her game because some guy...

I think more than temps are at play. Here in the US, historically the larger cities and industrial centers are in the North. The more rural areas are in the South. My experience is that whether in the frozen north or in the sunny south, folks in rural areas are more friendly and hospitable than city folks.

I have traveled extensively by car throughout the eastern U.S. over the past 40 years and mostly stayed away from the city crush and the rat race.
Out in the rural areas of New England and other areas the pace is slower and folks are just plain folks and very welcoming.
You feel right at home in places like that.
I suppose the U.S. would be considered a "foreign country" but I never felt or thought that way. We're too much alike in so many ways TUP TUP

In 1997, two composers created ‘The Most Unwanted Song’ by issuing a public opinion survey and compiling all the lyrical and musical elements that most people found annoying. It combines a harp, accordion, out-of-tune children singing about Christmas and Walmart, high-pitched flutes, tubas, keyboard demos, someone yelling random political terms through a megaphone, and an...

I agree with you 100%. I don't consider Canada a foreign country either. In my extended travels in Ontario and my four months stay there, I found the people to friendly, hospitable and just ordinary folks. Like you, I spent very little time in the cities. I really enjoyed my stay in Canada - it was summer!!

One of the world’s biggest living things is a mushroom. There’s a giant network of honey mushrooms spread across 2,200 acres of Oregon that’s more than 1,500 years old, and it strangles trees from underground by cutting off their nutrient and water supply. Scientists call it ‘The Humongous Fungus.’ (Source, Source 2)

The flu virus has a gel-like coating that keeps it protected in cold temperatures. The coating starts to melt around 72° F, so warmer weather means it’s more vulnerable in the open air. The closer it gets to freezing, the safer it is inside its ‘shell,’ which melts once it’s in your body. That’s why...

When a BBC hoax documentary aired on Halloween 1992, it terrified its 11 million viewers so much that the network had over 20,000 complaints. ‘Ghostwatch’ featured well-known BBC presenters, was shot with hand-held cameras, and, though billed as a drama, was mistaken for a real documentary. The experience was so frightening for both viewers and...

The ampersand used to be the 27th letter of the alphabet. To avoid confusion with the word ‘and’, people added ‘per se’ before its name when reciting the alphabet so that it ended: X, Y, Z, and per se &. Over time, the ‘and per se and’ ran together, and the term ‘ampersand’ was born....
