I was watching a business show last week and they brought up this same subject. The simple answer is yes it has gotten earlier.
A market research and customer opinion poll is the cause of this. Customers and poll responders complained that they wanted the "hot" products to hit the market sooner so they didn't have to wait until the last moment and run the risk of them selling out and their not being enough time for restocking. They also said it would be better on their budget if they could get an earlier start on the Christmas purchases. The show got in to it a little deeper but I'll just stop at the highlights.
So, yes you are correct, it is/has gotten earlier.
It was quite a shock to walk in and see all that Christmas stuff up allready ! But I must admit to feeling a tad nostalgic as it was a cold frosty day , so I just had to buy a nice 18 year old single malt to have a dram when I got home .
This is a good reminder to go ahead and do your xmass shopping, i have already got my wife's present bought.
Oh thank heavens for that I thought it was his front room.

Well . . . I must admit, I bought a Christmas present Tuesday afternoon. Kim said we needed to get the heavier gifts out of the way . . . or at least that's what I heard. So I bought my oldest son a Reese 2" drop drawbar with a 2" ball to fit his trailer hitch receiver.

They're lizard skin but I've been looking at some eel skin boots . . . might need something a little more slippery.
