Car Guards - What do you pay them

I was just sitting thinking about this today and it is becoming a very expensive exercise lately. So I was wondering what are the rest of you paying the car guards in your area :cash:

It is a tricky topic. If you don't pay them, then next time you are in the same place, you get your car "keyed".
And if you do pay them, then they are off to the bottle (or hardware ) store for some cheap vodka or meths.......

I'm not sure how to deal with this issue.

Stateside guys........ do you have the same problem?????????

Well for me it is really starting to become an expensive operation as I do a lot of riding around and parking during the day. I am normally not gone for more than around 40 to 50 minutes at a time so I usually give them around R3 to R4 depending on the guard. If it is a meths drinker I will only give them a R2. I don't like paying the gangster types at all because as AJ says it is like extortion. Some of the more professional types that I use more often I will give them a bit more. Plus on top of this you have the meter to pay as well :silent:

We even have those that work undercover and nothing get passed them :y114:

:y114: :y114: Probably the same as what I am thinking :silent:

And then you have those that use your car as a backrest :y114:

BUT some people rather just bring along their own car guard

Now I like that second one. I would do something like that. My late Rottie loved to ride in the bed of my truck. He just loved people and the only thing he would do to someone is lick them to death. When I parked at the post office or at a convenience store, everyone would give my my truck wide space. I did not have him him tied in the bed.

In general, I resent these "car-guards". Firstly, why should I pay some one to watch my car when I'm parked in an under-cover pay parking lot/garage or in the parking lot a mall where I'm going to spend money anyway. I don't need help finding a parking space or reversing out. The security should be supplied by the mall or venue etc. And if you do happen to have your car bumped, damaged, keyed or stolen, not one of the 'car guards' will have seen a thing!!! As soon as there is an issue, they're all blind, deaf and mute. So I'm a grump - I only tip a guard if I use open street parking.
It IS extortion and playing on South African's insecurities.

In the USA, we have car guards that we refer to as the local POLICE department.

Hit-n-Run (not reporting an accident) is a major offense here with pretty stiff penalties. To back that up, there's always "street justice".

Actually, keying cars is pretty rare and almost always is not random....the person doing it usually has a beef with you of some type.

My question has been partially answered, but do these "car guards" actually STOP anything? If I paid some low-life to guard my car and then returned to see it broken into, I'd demand a refund!

We also have police - SA Police and Metro Police. Metro are supposed to enforce traffic/vehicle violations BUT if they're on 'cell phone duty' or 'speed trap' duty they simply won't do anything else except their 'duty' for day - even if a 10 car pile-up happens right in front them. The response will be "No - I can't help. I'm on camera today." Best thing is, they seem to start at 07h30 and push off at around 5!!! They're actually a joke. I've never heard of a 'car guard' ever preventing a crime or aprehending an offender but I do believe that many of these so-called 'guards' are party to much of vehicle break-ins.....
And Dave - I support initiative IF YOU PROVIDE A REAL SERVICE. This car-guard lark is tantamount to the hundreds of 'blind' beggars on the street-corners...

My best 'car guard' was a bag full of tinned food. Many, many years ago, I was loading bags of groceries into the boot (trunk) of my car when I saw a hand sneak in and grab a bag of groceries. This on a very busy Saturday morning in full view of all and sundry. I was lifting a bag of tinned food from the trolley to the boot and when I saw the 'hand' I swung the bag in my hand as hard as I could in the general direction of where I thought the head would be. Bullseye! And one would be robber was out cold on the tarmac! Then a couple of rather large 'boertjies' jumped out of the their 'bakkies' and made sure the robber was going nowhere until the police arrived.
Moral of the story - don't mess with the dress!! :y72:

Edit by DaveM for those across the pond

'boertjies' = Big Afrikaans gentlemen :ya2:
'bakkies' = pickup truck
