Congrats on the panhead! That is a cool acquisition. :y115:

I and others have found that a heavier oil than Triumph uses in their stock forks works much better. I was curious as to what Frank recommends.

Just a quickey here as I dont want to hi-jack this thread.
I have noticed lately that on decel, I am getting bar shake.
As I haven't replaced my fork oil yet, (and it is due according to service notes)should I go for a heavier weight, and any recommendations.?

Harry, my guess is the shake is a tire problem - either balance or cupping or alignment. Look closely for signs of cupping on the front tire. I am running 10 weight in my forks. Some guys run 15.

re tyre cupping,I had a W O F inspection just the other week, and the mech remarked how nice and even the front tyre was wearing.
However, I haven't ruled out balance, just figured if the fork service was due, I'd try that first.
cheers for the oil weights.

My parts from the USA have not arrived yet .... the customs here are sometimes the problem .
So no results to report as yet. They were [posted over 3 weeks ago !!

Hi Listers , Well my parcel from the USA finally got here after 42 days and to add insult to injury : the box had been ripped open & the 18 tooth sprocket was stolen !!!

I installed the coil and the problem is solved , the motor pulls & revs as it should.

I am going to order again & get the air inj. eliminator kit as well & hope this does not take so long !!

Thanks for all the help , it is a public holiday here today & I am expecting a truck load of HD sidevalve spares to arrive later today. Christmas is early this year !!

Regards , Chris J

Chris, sure glad to hear the coil solved the problem. Good show.

You can order an 18 tooth sprocket from your Triumph dealer and I would recommend TT. That way you won't have to fight customs or worry about theft. The price is about the same. The Ai removal kit consists of a plug for the airbox to plug the hole where the AI gets its air from the airbox, two vacuum caps that cover the vacuum ports on the intake where the vacuum hoses run to the AI and two bolts that close the hles where the AI tubes go into the heads. You can pick up this stuff at a hardware store. Just make sure the bolts that go into the head are not too long; they need to be no deeper than a spark plug.

Just take one of the A.I. chrome pipe fittings out of the head as a sample and get a couple of (preferably) stainless cap screws from your local bolt and nut supplier. Obviously cut to length as required.
If you can't find a suitable plug for the hole in the airbox,I'll make you an aluminium one.

Hi Listers , I have spoken to the spares guy at the local Triumph dealership a few months ago & they cannot suply an 18 t sprocket. Their "solution" was to go the 530 route , fitting a front & rear sprocket & 530 chain at huge cost !!!

I broke a spoke in the back wheel a year or more ago & one spoke from the dealership was more than double the price that I sell s/s Harley spokes for !!!

I can go the hardware shop route to eliminate the air injection , but thought that if I have to order a sprocket : I may as well get the new bonn solution.

I do have a South Bend lathe but it has an Imperial screw cutting gearbox so I can't machine metric threads.

Thanks again for all the help & advice,

Regards , Chris J

I cannot believe they stole your sprocket (Ok I suppose we are in SA so yes I can believe it) I however do wonder what on earth they think they may do with it :silent:

This is also my biggest fear when ordering stuff here in SA that it will just vanish

A T.V. crew filmed P.O. workers ripping open parcels & stealing stuff a while ago & the TV channel was prevented from airing the incident by the workers union " Because they were not advised that they were going to be filmed " !!!!!

I airfreight HD spares in & so far everything has arrived safely. You need to bring a fair quantity to make it viable , like 50 kg or $2000 to$3000 worth of stuff.

The Bonnie is running , so that is the main thing.

Cheers, Chris J

well folks i must say that made for a very good read and a happy ending as well which is allways a bonus sorry to hear about the stolen sprocket tho'if i remember right 1 of the fellows here in OZ used a early Nissan Bluebird sump plug to block off the holes in the head after removing the chrome tubes.maybe a rejet needed?good thing you got those carb screw's and dont forget to rebalance the carb's

Devo how did you get on with your oil change?i did mine recently and used 15w oil and cut new spacers 20mm longer then the stock to compensate for spring sag and give me better preload on the front springs
Benny

Removing the AI does not produce a need to rejet. It does not affect the running of the engine except the engine will be a tad cooler. All it does is inject air into the exhaust to burn unburned fuel. It causes the headers to be quite a bit warmer.

Benny, yup, changed the oil and went up to 15w.
Went to a lot of trouble to make sure we filled back to the exact spec, and left springs and spacers stock.
To be honest,no huge difference felt, but the problem I was trying to fix was in fact a bend in the rim which I didnt find till I took of the wheel. However, that'll be another story when I feel up to stripping the wheel and sending it of for repair.
BTW, stop being a stranger here, where good guys here ya know. :ya2:
