1978 Bonneville

I am very tempted by this bike. Is it a smart purchase for a relative rookie? It really looks well taken care of in the photos.

I'd have to say that a 4 decade old bike is probably not a good choice for someone just entering motorcycling.
It will have more things arise than a bakery. It'd be enough to sour you on the whole sport.
I suggest finding a pretty low mileage later model; less than 10 years old.

That's probably pretty good advice, but it depends on your experience with bikes and how well you can cope with problems and work with wrenches.
As a first and only bike it may be a risky way to start out, but if it runs reasonably well then I would be tempted.
I own old bikes which run beautifully, but I wouldn't be without a modern bikes for high speed riding and touring.
But if you're not into that then you should be OK, but give it some thought first.
These old bikes ran well in their day and can still run well today, but they can also take a lot of TLC.
