This is when you need a shotgun that would sort them out.

Back in the late 70's when I still had my Bonnie I woke up the one morning to find my bike gone. As it turned out when I got to work and looked out the window there was my bike up on the hill with the thief working on it. Now the way the terrain was one had to go all the way to the end of the road I was in take the road up the hill and then double back down the road. I phoned the cops but he still got away, I did get the bike back but had to replace the ignition switch.

It's stunning how much bike theft goes on in other places and countries.
Here, where I am, it's not what I would call a "problem," but it does happen so I keep my bikes out of sight and well locked up.
I never let them sit outside for all to see. When I arrive home from a ride it's straight into the garage and the doors closed and locked.

When I'm on the road I use disc locks and a bike cover overnight.
If I'm traveling with a buddy we lash the bikes together with security cables and locks, then cover them up.
It's easy enough to tell that it's a bike, but at least the cover doesn't show off what it is.
So far, so good.

That was just brazen. Obviously the hammer was a show of force and used as a weapon, so he has every intention of using it to achieve his goals. That makes him dangerous and will probably require deadly force to take him down
