I just discovered these recently and they're really convenient and pretty good. (being single I exist mostly on frozen food :oh:) When i've tried to freeze hamburger meat in the past it always ruins it. But somehow (probably thru the miracle of chemicals ) those steak-ums are ok. The question is, has anyone tried other brands and found any that are better? there are a dozen brands i've seen since i tried these and I gotta figure of all those there must be some that are better.

Harris Ranch Burgers at Costco are better. I prefer to use fresh meat.

So do i, but the point of this is that i can have them in the freezer and have one anytime. With fresh i have to eat it all within a few days or it goes bad. This way i can buy a box and if i don't feel like a burger for weeks or even months i don't have to worry about it going bad. I stopped buying it fresh a while back because i was tired of having to throw away 1/2 a package.

Allright, we got us a regular Martha Stewart section.

Tupperware makes a "stacker" of sorts that comes with a ring and press for forming burgers. This way, you can buy the fresh meat, form the burgers in the stackers, freeze 'em, and pop one off the stack whenever you have a hankerin' for real meat. Works great and the best part is that you can make the burgers as thick or as thin as you like, depending on if you're serving yourself or the in-laws.

I'm kinda picky in that I prefer ground round or sirloin to regular ol' HB.

Stackers work real good for fresh ground pork sausage also.

Also, if you ever get HB that is brown inside, it means that they ground it up with ice to add weight. That's an old meat market trick.

The diversity of topics on this forum are amazing! Thanks Fuzzy for the info on the stackers.

Well, i figured since someone started a thread on steak or something like that a while back and got a ton of replies, i'd give it a shot. And those stackers do sound great and i'd definately buy them if it weren't that i can't stand the texture of frozen hamburgers. Why the ones i buy frozen are better in that regard i have no idea. But when i freeze hamburger it makes the texture like rubber when you cook it. It's a bit the same with the steakums but not as bad. Plus the simplicity of buying a box and throwing it in the freezer as opposed to making the patties yourself is also very attractive to me because i detest spending time in the kitchen messing with food ! The less time spend cooking and otherwise messing with food the better as far as i'm concerned.

I don't like that stuff ! I like burgers with fat in em ! 20% is the minimum for me. I like the taste infinately better. in fact, that 7% stuff to me tastes like ****. Plus the more fat the less rubbery they get when frozen. fat is also where all the taste is, and i figure i'd rather eat hamburger and other fatty meats less often and enjoy them then eat them more often and not enjoy them. Otherwise i'd just eat whatever is healthy and not even consider taste.

You guys are trying really hard to covert me, but it ain't gonna work !!!

I bought some of those frozen steak ums a while back and when my Wife saw them she came back at me with the nutritional stats listed on the box.

She said they'd kill me with the sodium and carb content!

If you REALLY have a death wish, buy the frozen White Castle burgers!!

I never tried them, but a friend of mine loves em. I'd probably try them if they came in smaller quantities then i have seen. I eat extremely well 90% of the time, so i have no problem eating junk for pure enjoyment the other 10%. It's those who eat it 1/2 the time who suffer the consequences. But the only place i've seen those WC burgers only has huge boxes.....Smart and Final which is one of those stores that sell huge quantity packages for a bigger discount.

If they really are as bad as you say, i bet they're tasty tho !

The price you pay for packaging and processing is a concept known as "value added." You can save significantly by doing certain steps yourself. If you are still able to buy "value added" products cheap, be advised that the vendor/producer is cutting costs somewhere and it may be in the quality of the product. (That, or they're hiring immigrant somali muslims, i.e. Tyson Foods.)

If you're after flavor, mix fresh ground round with about 25% fresh ground pork or fresh pork sausage then patty it up in them stackers.

Try it!! You'll like it!!
