It's like a gymnastics routine.

Left hand gripping left handlebar (steering locked left), right hand gripping rear/side grab bar.

Left foot planted, ball of right foot on centerstand lever.

In one smooth motion:

*left hand pulls back
*right hand pulls up
*left leg extend in a "hop"
*shift full body weight to right foot

Done.

Glad you got the mainstand sorted. Paul is spot on with the the routine put it on the mainstand.

Thanks for the stand tutorial, i am sure this will help me greatly but my next question is what to grab on to when you have bath tubs? Is there still supposed to be a handle or something? I only really have the toast rack to grab on. Can anyone post a pic please.

I would guess that you would grab onto the rear license plate bracket. That is what I do on my 51 6T. But just guessing!

You can grab under the edge of the rear fender, or under the edge of the seat, but careful that the seat is very securely mounted!

The biggest factor is getting ALL of your body weight onto the lever, this is critical to how easy all of the rest is.

Hey guys
I inadvertantly shifted this and a few other threads this morning.
I'm thinking I have put them back where they were, but if I got it wrong please advise and I will put it right.:)

Re: 3TA Centre stand, speedo and general advice required please - recommissioning pro

Got it! I think with a bit of practice I should be able to master the routine!

Good news, my 3TA passed it's MOT this morning! What I discovered on my trip to the testing station was that I have a clutch that has a lot of free play (the lever is almost released before biting) and the engine didn't seem to have a lot of power going up hill - perhaps because of the clutch I couldn't be sure...

One more trip to DVLA to change the taxation class and then I will be able to take a ride out to investigate. Next job to look at the clutch cable adjustment - any tips welcome!

Re: 3TA Centre stand, speedo and general advice required please - recommissioning pro

You need to go step-by-step in the setup of the 3 or 4 internal clutch pressure springs to the proper release tension (somewhere around one spring coil visible above the outer edge of the spring cup), then loosen in some slack on the cable, perform the center screw adjustment for the pushrod with about 1/4 turn of slack, then the clutch cable abutment adjustment, then the clutch lever adjustment if your bike has a lever slack adjuster (early ones don't).

You can always leave the primary cover off to test ride the bike and allow for much easier re-adjustment of the pressure springs.

clutch basket wear.jpeg

I removed the outer cover to investigate the spring tension etc and found the basket appears to be loose. Is this much movement normal? The springs didn't look even and not wound in as far as I expected either.

I then removed the clutch plates, first and second one came away separately, the rest came out as one lump so obviously need some cleaning - anyone recommend anything in particular, I was thinking either petrol or degreaser?

Looking at the basket in situ I noticed the grooves where the plates slide in and out are showing signs of wear. Not looking too good at the moment. Any thoughts please?

The notches in the basket can be dressed to a smooth finish. I use degreasing solvent to clean the plates, but have used petrol before (with plenty of ventilation).

Some looseness in the basket is acceptable, it's really down to once it becomes noisy it's too far gone.

As I mentioned in another thread, it's easy to adjust the clutch BEFORE you install the primary cover, then take the bike out for a ride. If you feel the clutch slipping, just pull over and tighten the screws a bit. Keep tightening till the bike will take a full throttle all at once from rolling along about 2000 RPM in any gear without slipping.

Having looked at the plates the fingers were very worn and by the time they and the basket had been redressed they would have been slopping around so I have ordered new parts so with luck I will not have to disturb it again only for adjustment.

Thanks for the advice grandpaul on the correct set up. I will certainly give that ago when I am reassembling next week.

Back to the speedo. I think I now have the correct one, I am now in need of a rubber gasket that goes between speedo and nacelle. Anyone know where I can purchase one please?

That's what I did and is probably the best solution in the long run.
When I rebuilt my '70 T100 the clutch basket was so severely worn from the action of the clutch plate ears that it was beyond saving.
I decided to start with all new clutch plates and clutch basket. The clutch action is smooth and quiet.
The bike is mainly a Sunday driver so the new parts should last for a very long time and will be worth the investment.

Re: 3TA Centre stand, speedo and general advice required please - recommissioning pro

Woohoo, new parts have arrived so all being well my 3TA clutch should be back together later this week. I also recently purchased a rubber cover for the distributor so I guess while I am playing with engine bits I just as well try and work out how to fit that too.

Speedo is going to have to wait, need to check whether current fake version has a trip reset and bulb holder I can reuse to save a few quid, and rubber seal I can use as I haven't located a replacement yet (to go between the bezel and nacelle) failing that I guess I will measure and buy a big O ring....

Clutch done, bike tested after changing a split spark plug cap and it now pulls yey. Next to look at skipping front forks... But before that i am looking at buying a lucas ammeter and would appreciate your comments, first should it be a two inch ammeter and does this unit look close to an original? Ebay item 390692620824 cheers
