2017 St Hard To Start In Cooler Weather

Hopped on the ST yesterday to ride -- outside air temp was about 57*F/14*C. This is the coldest it's been this year (yah, don't laugh!). I got the bike in April 2017.

The bike started fine and then quickly lost RPM and sputtered out.

Started it again, same thing.

Started a third time, gave it constant throttle - not a lot - but steady - and it died.

Fourth time, gave it gas with revving the engine - vROOM vROOM - and it stayed on.

Went for my ride and had no problem starting/stopping during the day.

There are a TON of posts about this over on the Rat Forum, with fixes ranging from remapping the ECU to holding the starter switch longer to not starting it for 30 seconds after turning the ignition key to ON.

Any personal experience on our Forum with this? Pretty disappointing to have a bike with <3000 miles be finicky in the morning. And it isn't even that cold!!

Sorry, I don't have an EFI model, and this is the first time I heard of this, so am of no help at all.
It sounds like an electronic problem with the cold-start, fast-idle circuit - if that's not being too obvious BGRIN
 
Had it been a while since you last started/rode it?
What kind of fuel do you use? Any fuel with ethanol will attract moisture. Try to avoid fuel with ethanol if at all possible.
I know it says in my manual I can use 87 octane rated fuel in my bike, but I don't know what the lowest reccomendations are for the ST. I ALWAYS use the high test gas. Up here usually has less or NO ethanol in it.

Same here.
I use high test in all my engines even though they call for regular, but considering that this seems to be a frequent problem from what she says, it's probably more than just a gas problem.
 
Hi, guys --

I routinely use ethanol-free gas in the bikes (and the lawn mower, weed whacker, and leaf blower!). I'll use regular gas in the bike when I'm actively riding, but I try to run it all out and refill with just eth-free.

I suspect it's some electronic issue, too. We're getting a cold snap here, so I'll fire it up again and see how it does.

Very disappointing.

Definitly sounds like the ECU needs a upgrade to alleviate this issue. Could be something as simple a faulty readings from the intake air temp sensor.

Thanks, Qship. Went out again late yesterday after it had cooled off quite a bit. It fires right up but after about 10 seconds of idling, the RPMs start surging a bit, then it dies.

I'll have to trailer it to the dealer in a few days, maybe.
