1977 Bonneville 750 Serial Numbers

Hello-
I love me some old Bonnevilles, and I ran across a running 1977 Bonnie 750 for sale locally. Naturally I jumped at the chance, but the frame serial number and the engine serial number do not match - are they supposed to match? I was under the assumption that they were? Anyone?

Grandpaul probably knows this right off the top of his head and may jump in later, but I seem to recall that at some point the frame and engine numbers no longer matched.
I'll do some checking and come back later if GP hasn't already come up with the answer.

Yes the Frame and Engine numbers are supposed to match, just sold my '77 Bonnie a coupmonths ago.

When the bike left Meriden, yes.

However, we're talking about a 40-year-old bike. How much do you care about matching numbers? I would only care if I planned to flip an otherwise-standard bike and the non-matching numbers weren't reflected in a lower asking price.
