Hello I just have a few questions. I am a new member here and I am curious as to know if it is necessary to take my bike back to the dealer for the service? The dealer is over 3 hours away and it's the closest one to me. I have been working on my own bikes for quite a long time even rebuilt a handful I have the knowledge and the tools to perform this myself. Is it really necessary to take it back? I have been thinking about purchasing the Dealer tool as well anyone have any details on it? Is it legitimate? I guess the real question is will it void my warranty if I perform the inspection/oil change myself?

Quite a few views, but no replies. I think many are reluctant to give advice in a situation like this.
The three modern bikes I now own were never taken back to the dealer for first service. Like you, I'm pretty handy with a wrench and have also restored bikes.
All I did was change the oil and filter with factory approved products; recorded what I did and kept the receipts.
I went over all the nuts and bolts myself and nothing was loose. No problems at all then - or since for that matter.
I think you'll be fine if you do the same, unless the owners manual clearly states to not do it yourself.

Thanks Rocky. I have never taken a bike back to the dealer before either but wanted some other feedback. I'll have to take a look at my manual and double check. I was worried about doing that voiding my warranty but I don't think that would be the case. I will probably most likely purchase the dealer tool as that seems the way to go.

Self service does not negate the warranty, just keep reciepts and mark your owners book. I will take my Street Twin into the shop for the 10K service as I do not have the tools to bleed the brakes. I did the 500 mile and changed oil and filter again at 5,000 miles. Just put EBC brake pads on and new tires.

Excellent thanks for the reply. :)

I've allways done all my own servicing but i have always taken new bikes back for there first service , after that i do it all my self and as said keep a record and follow service recommendations in your owners manual .
