Hi folks
Can anyone help me out.
I have aT140 registered in 1981 that someone decided years ago to bodge up with a pair of xs650 mag wheels
I want to go back to spokes but I don’t know which side of the wheel the speedo drive should be on that model or if it makes any difference.
Thanks
Graham

Are you sure it was "bodged"? Morris mag wheels were an option, and they were fitted to contemporary Japanese bikes as well.

It only makes a difference if you want to be 'correct' for 1981, otherwise the Smiths speedo gearbox and drive ring can be fitted on the disc side of any spoke hub, in place of the "Lock ring RH" shown in the 1981 parts book.

I thought the only T140 that had mag wheels was the 1979 Special, at least in the US. I don’t remember seeing them as standard or optional on any other year. I have a 79 Special, but I may be wrong as I’m more familiar with Commando’s.

T140D was fitted with Lester mag wheels, that use 6-hole discs and the front axle needs the special left hand slider.

To amplify my earlier post, Morris mag wheels were an option on any '80-on twin - '80 parts books online do not show the front, only the rear; all later parts book show both.

All Morris fronts use the same fork sliders as spoke hub fronts. Early Morris fronts use five short bolts through each bearing carrier (and disc) into the wheel, later fronts use the same four long bolts as the spoke hub, through the disc(s), both bearing carriers and the wheel.

Afaik, all Morris rears use the same sprocket and 4-hole disc as the spoke hub.

One of my Triumphs was retro-fitted with early front and rear Morris mags obtained from Meriden.

If you tell me the markings on the wheels, I can probably ID what Yamaha there are from. In the 70’s Yamaha used cast wheels a a variety of bikes both the XS and RD 400 and I believe the XS650, typically the wheels were18” front and rear, but the rear wheel was wider on the XS. There are a few for sale on EBay to give you an idea on what people are asking, but I have no idea how long they have been listed.
