Visors - How Often Do You Replace Yours?

I have an HJC IS-Max2 helmet and really like how it fits me. I noticed that my visor was pretty scratched - how the heck did that happen? I'm very careful about setting the helmet down, but obviously something scratched the dickens out of my visor!

I ordered a replacement visor from Revzilla and wow! What a difference! I can see again! LOL
For $26USD, it feels like a brand new helmet.

I was wondering how often riders tend to replace their visors -- I know it's probably a function of how much you ride, but in general?

I also wanted to give a big thumbs-up to the pinlock inserts for visors. After trying all sorts of liquids, creams, Cat Crap, and other products that swore to eliminate visor fogging, someone suggested a visor insert. They are generally specific to your helmet -- I saw inserts for AGVs on Revzilla's site -- and there are inserts for helmets that don't have a pinlock-ready visor. You might have to do a bit of research for your specific helmet. But this is the cat's meow for me. It works great!

well i have a nitro lid i bought it 10 years ago it fits so well i cant bring my self to change it ive tried twice and both new lids are in the store room unused , I've never changed the visor on it but its still like the day i bought it !! .
i just use warm soapy water before and after a ride and that seems to work for me .

I have never changed a visor and am very careful when I clean it to prevent scratching.
Obviously, as you found out, replace it when it becomes scratched to the point of making clear vision a problem.
Like shane I remove the visor and use lots of warm water if there are dried bugs on it.
Don't use paper towel to scrub at the bugs as it contains abrasives that will minutely scratch the surface which will become worse over time.
Out on the road I carry a disposable alcohol based product made especially for cleaning visors.
I have two; Cycle Wipes and Viso-Clean.

Wow, Shane, 10 years is a long time! Do you not worry about the foam deteriorating?

And I guess I must just be hard on visors, lol. I better start a Visor Fund to pay for my misadventures. :-)

I know it can be hard to give up a helmet that has become like an old friend after all those years, but 10 years is too long for me.
6-7 years is about my limit and then I start looking for the current replacement for what I'm wearing.
But that's not to say that I wouldn't be just as protected in an older helmet - just personal preference and peace of mind.
It's like tires; regardless of wear, when they become 6-7 years old I start looking for new ones on my vehicles.

Well, see, there ya go...I've been using a damp paper towel to clean the visor before every ride. Thanks for the info, Rocky, that's off my list now for sure!.

I checked Amazon for the Cycle Wipes - uh-oh:
Note: Cycle Wipes are not recommended for visor inserts

OK, sticker shock here: the Viso-Clean product is a little over a $1USD per wipe. Sheesh! It would be more cost effective for me to just replace the visor once a year at $25 if needed, and use a chamois or 100% cotton cloth to clean it otherwise. I know other helmets' visors are more expensive than my HJC, but still...

U-Line sells a box of 120 wipes for polycarb safety glasses for $10 plus a $10 shipping fee for me. Even with the s&h, that works out to 20 cents per wipe.

Rau sells 100 safety glass wipes for $5.48 plus about $10 s&h from Florida to Virginia on 2-day delivery.

Walmart's Bausch & Lomb wipes work on polycarb lenses, too: $5.60 for a box of 50.

I'm starting to break the code: inserting the word 'Motorcycle' on a product raises its cost by about 50%! Amirite?! :ROFLMAO:

If you're careful with the cleaning you may never have to replace your visor.
At home, let warm (semi-hot) water under the tap soften debris first.
Cycle wipes are not recommended for visor inserts or Iridium visors, otherwise are OK for a regular visor. I haven't had any problem with them.
I forget where I got my CW's, but may have been part of an order for other items. Same for the Viso-Cleans.
I only use them out on the road in an emergency if I get a disgusting bug splash on the visor. Otherwise, I wait until I get home.
But as you found, it pays to shop around.

I had to use Dave's 'Ewwww' emoji for that one! I think I'll spring for some primo wipes for on the road, as you said, and keep the cheapies for at-home use.

I did a quick-change on my visor this afternoon - pulled off the clear one and popped on a dark one that I had just ordered. It was fabulous! Riding westbound, the sun is so bright that my regular modular helmet dark visor flip-down insert isn't enough. Today I used the new dark visor *and* the dark insert -- what a difference that made!

Every time I hear a 'thwack!' on my helmet/visor where a crunchy bug has met his Maker, I think about how people can ride without a full-face covering of some sort. That would *have* to hurt.

It was a fabulous day here for a bike ride!

AGV helmet for me......6.5 years old ---- excellent shape--- visor is cleaned with dish detergent and water.....cloth rag not paper towels.......and NOT glass cleaner ---I heard years ago it would dry out the visor and increase cracking and scratching

Love publik inserts swear by them, , good idea I just cleaned mine and still hard to see through. Guess maybe a new visor is in order, have an Arai hope not too $$$ !

Damn, you guys keep your helmets FOREVER. I buy a new one every year. Hey, it's my head in there. Like anything else, helmets deteriorate with age. I cringe when I see my buddy's 20-year-old helmet. At even half that age, you're just wearing it for decoration.
