Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
29 May 2009, 7:32 am

When Windows Vista was initially released by Microsoft, a handy tool was made available which could scan your computer to determine if it is capable of running the then new OS. Well, now that Windows 7 is on the way, Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor has been made available:

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor scans your PC’s system, programs and devices to check if it’s able to run Windows 7. After a few minutes, the report will let you know if your PC meets the system requirements, if there are any known compatibility issues with your programs and devices, and will also provide guidance on your upgrade options to Windows 7.

Note this program is still in beta, but if you are planning to upgrade your current computer to Windows 7, you might want to give it a try to make sure your system can handle it.

The only thing I know is that if I look through my window I get great Vistas :y115:

I think for the most part Vista is fine now. There were problems when it was first released and most of these were hardware driver related - which MS does not have control over. Vista also was a different OS and involved a learning curve. I have rarely had a problem with XP; but I will say that Vista is more stable and is much more self diagnosing and repairing than XP is. That said, I don't use Vista either.

You need to be aware of this - while you can directly upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, you cannot directly upgrade from XP to Windows 7, at least at the present time and MS has no plans to make this possible. I hope there will be an outcry from XP users, especially in the business world, and MS will provide a utility to allow upgrading from XP to Windows 7. What the current situation means to us XP users is that we will have to uninstall XP (and that usually means a reformat of the hard drive) and install Windows 7 from scratch. The only way around this is to purchase and upgrade to Vista then upgrade to Windows 7.

However, I am in no hurry to upgrade. My long experieince with MS and Windows is that for the first six months to a year of a new OS, the bugs come out. Give Windows 7 at least six months on the market before you upgrade/install. I also do this with service packs, which are essentially upgrades. Let others find the bugs and let MS fix them before you upgrade.

I recently bought a new laptop with Vista installed. What a load of cr23p!!!!!.I have now after lots of frustration and swearing just changed to Windows 7 Ultimate. It is a breath of fresh air.Everything works and it almost reads your mind(not that diffecult with me ).My laptop runs smoothly now :y115: :y18:

I'm getting anxious to get 7. But it would be a waste to try it now since it won't be too long before i am ready to upgrade to a whole new PC. I got my sister a new PC recently with 7/64 bit and it seems nice. Can't tell how much simpler it is because with the small amount of time i had with it i spent most of it looking for the things that are in different places. One thing i didn't like tho is there is no file association window like you get in XP and previous. The only way to associate file types is to right click a file and choose the program like you can also do in XP. But i need the file association window for other reasons. i just hope i don't run into more missing things like that. (i googled it and yes, it IS missing according to others)

By the way Dave, do you have 32 or 64 bit? From what i hear 64 is the way to go since things have been heading that way for a couple years now, and supposedly people are finding most 32 apps are compatible. And if you have issues, buying either the pro or ultimate retail versions give you both 32 and 64 versions in case you decide you need 32. A gamer on another forum said he benchmarked his PC with 32 then 64 with all the same hardware and said 64 doubled his speed !

I am running 32 bit sort of just stuck to it. Oh and the file association that is missing is this it :y114:

the thing that makes it that much better is you don't have to go searching around for these thing that seem not to be there. All you do is open the search from the start window and type in what you want to do and it will give you a list, so much easier

Thats odd. I tried the search and when i finally gave up trying to find it i googled it and found guys in forums saying it doesn't have it and pointing to 3rd party apps that add it to 7 ! Where is it? Or did you only find it in the search and if so what term did you use? maybe i used one that wasn't as good. (tho i cannot recall what i used)

I will be buying the 64 bit just so i'm as up to date as possible. But i will get the pro retail version because it has the ability to download and used MS virtual XP and virtual maxhine which allow things to run that mign not run on 7 including 32 bit apps as i understand. If i lose anything i really want/need i may have to dual boot or go to 32. But at least i'll have those options. this is why i hate the way MS forces us to upgrade regularly. What if you bought a expensive car or bike and you loved it and wanted to keep it for life. But every 3 years they changed the fuel gas stations provide and you had to trash your car or bike and get a new one which uses this new fuel and doesn't run the way you like. thats about the size of it. MS.......

I did the search using the phrase "File association" and it was listed as you can see in the attachments. This was one of the fist things I did learn when using Win 7 you have to find a lot of things using the search option :y114:

I fully agree with you when it comes to MS this si why I would like to get away from them.
