It is early. The sunlight is still rising before me, softly illuminating the road ahead like an airport runway. I can see my opponent, a tantalizing stretch of road strikingly beautiful yet dangerously menacing. With a series of sharp rights and sharp lefts, it looks like a snake slithering away from me. My palms are sweaty and my heart begins to pound in anticipation, but I am OK for I am not alone. My trusted companion is already in attack mode waiting for my signal. With a quick hand gesture she instantly responds without fear as we launch after it. Hard into the corners, she roars like a lion chasing its prey.
I brake hard, downshift and lean while she dips and compresses with each turn. Together we are one, and this snake has no chance. The turns come up fast but quickly disappear behind us. The exit of one corner feeds instantly into the next and there is no room for error. The snake is fast and ferocious, and I’m a bit nervous, but I am soon comforted by my partner’s melody as her squealing brakes, rumbling exhaust and engine screams through the rev range. They are like musical instruments all wailing in harmony. The music soothes me and she plays them well.
But the tune changes as the chase nears its end. What started as a treacherous path has now become a calm, almost sedated, stretch of road. I look around and see no more turns. It is as though the snake has given up and disappeared to return and fight another day. Today we are victorious as my partner and I have served our purpose. What, is your purpose?
