I just got off the phone with one of Jim's daughters who is an MD. The surgery went longer than was anticipated - 13 hours. Because of the long surgery, Jim developed a blood clot in his leg that moved to his lung. Jim was on a respirator sfter the surgery and the respirator went crazy because it could not get enough oxygen to Jim. That was their clue that he had a blood clot. They did a CAT scan to confirm it and found remnants of the clot in his leg. His heart is under stress because it is trying to pump blood past the clot.
The options are to let the clot dissolve or go in and remove the clot. Either option has its own risks. He has been moved to a different hospital that has the specialists and the equipment to go in and remove the clot. The decision has not yet been made. Jim is strong and a fighter; so far he is holding his own. But he is very critical and his daughter did not want me to get my hopes up too high.
Both she and her mother are holding up pretty well. Jim's other daughter lives here in Florida.
