My search for panniers appears to be over. I found a set of the Triumph waxed bags for a excellent price. They should arrive early next week. A question for Sarah about your tank bag. It won't scratch your tank? Manufacturer?

I've used magnetic tank bags on different bikes for many years without any paint damage.
The key is to make sure the tank is very clean and nothing is stuck to the magnets that could result in scratches.
The tank bags I have are made of soft and padded material on the bottom (most are I'm sure) and are very paint friendly, but you have to pay attention where you place it off the bike because the magnets are strong and can pick up debris.

OK, so everything that Rocky said was spot on! I managed to get a bit of debris on the magnet of the tank bag, though, and that put some very small scratches on the tank of my first Bonnie.

After that Bonnie bit the dust in an accident :y25:, I opted to put some protective film on my brand new bike before I could futz it up, too. I think I could drag a box cutter over it now and it won't scratch it.

I ordered the film from The Tankslapper guy. He was extremely helpful and held my hand via long distance during the ordering and installation process.

These guys all say just spritz some baby shampoo and water on the surface and stretch it, it goes on like butter! Well, it may go on like butter if you've been doing it for 25 years. I was lousy at it - there's a nice visible line where the two pieces have a slight gap between them - but I didn't care. The biggest area of the tank was covered, and I am happy.

If you live in a decent-sized town, you could probably hire a custom car or car window tint shop to do it for you.

In case you want to order it, here's what I bought for my 2017 Street Twin:

Your Order Contains:
  • 1 x 95mm Turbo Squeegee
  • 2 x Street Twin Tank Protector
(Film Type: XPEL Ultimate (Gloss), Year: 2017)
  • 2 x Street Twin Tank Top Protector
(Film Type: XPEL Ultimate (Gloss), Year: 2017)
I bought more than I needed for the one Twin because I had two other bikes that I used the remnants on.

Interesting, I don't see a specific Street Twin option for the film, but I would definitely call and ask the fellow.

Insofar as the specific tank bag goes, I got it from the Mother Ship (Amazon); and it's called a Classic Motogear Extreme tank bag. It was $38 USD when I bought it in January, 2016. It's currently out of stock on Amazon, but I've seen it come and go in their inventory. It seems to run about $57 at some other stores online.

Hope this helps!

NICE LOOKING REAR END!!!

Sarah, I the luggage rack a stand alone item?

Best to go to Ventura and drill down into the items. I can't recall if you have to buy a frame for it or not. I bought all this stuff in one fell insurance payout swoop, so as to rip the bandaid off all at once, price-wise. I can't recall if it were an a la carte item.

And actually, Rocky is a Ventura expert here! He's the one who convinced me to get the Ventura bags and all. :-) Rocky, can you add anything about the Ventura racks or bags? Any other Ventura users here?

Renntec also makes a very nice tail rack. I had one on my 2013 Bonnie and liked it a lot.

Once you have the rails fitted to the bike you then have the option of what rack to use.
When I'm not using the racks I install a grab rail mainly for the looks and to not have empty rails sticking up in the air.
If I'm traveling light I install the smaller rack to hold the sport bag like what is shown in Sarah's picture and below.
The grab rail is an extra cost item and I don't have a picture, but imagine the rack below with the bag support missing and just the grab rail loop in place.
The Ventura site will show you all the options.
I don't have the pannier rails fitted to any of my bikes, just the rails for the sport pack and larger bags that rest on the seat.

I wasn't to clear in my question. Your luggage rack in post 32 is what I am interested in. Do you know if this set up can be used along with th Triumph waxed saddle bags?

I understood your question and the answer is still no.
Any bag of a suitable size can be fitted to the carrier shown in the picture, but for saddle bags of any sort you would need the side rails to hold the bags.
With this basic system there is just no way for the saddlebags to be fitted without extra hardware.
In post #18 you can just see the extra rails that are needed to hold saddlebags.
In that post she lists all the hardware needed if you're going to fit the complete system.

I only use the basic system and the bag that sits on the seat - as does a riding buddy.

Say, DKirk, I don't understand the need/desire for Ventura rails for the waxed saddle bags. When I bought Triumph bags, they came with their own dedicated, specific rails/supports for the Bonnie. Isn't this also true for the Street Twin? And then you can just buy a separate tail rack if desired. I think if you get the Triumph rails/saddlebags, you'll have to go with a vendor like Renntec for a tail rack. As Rocky said, the Ventura rack will require specific Ventura rails. And I dunno if they're compatible with Triumph waxed saddlebags.

Again, best to just call the head honcho at Ventura! He's the Subject Matter Expert and will know 'zactly what you need or don't need.
