It made me think when he mentioned that some collectors would never have even taken the bike out the box and kept it as it was to save the value of it. I can sort of see the logic in this to a point but I think I would have done the same as what he did with it.
 
Yeah, what might be in there is nothing more than a lump of rust and worthless.
I don't know how you could value something you can't see. Maybe just take the cardboard off so you could at least see it and then value it from there.

What a great find!

The only bike I have ever seen in a crate was my own Bonneville.
It sat in the crate all winter and I would visit it once a month until I could take it home in April.

There is still one in the crate in the Base Borden Military Museum. It's a 1953 I believe. Painted Army green of course. Took pictures of it a couple of years ago when I was there , but can't seem to find it now.

I would definitely have uncrated it, carefully, and kept the crate!
