I called the amsoil dealer i mentioned only to find he is also tacking on shipping ! so theres still no way to get amsoil reasonably. I can order it online all day long for the same total price he was going to give me. In fact, probably cheaper because he would charge me tax too being in the same state. well, i dunno. Maybe i'll go with Motul. Thats the brand i'm running at the moment, but it's the blend and I want the full synth. And motul is apparently one of the few true synth based oils left. thier 5100 is what i'm running, and the 7100 is the full synth. Of course it depends on cost compared to ordering amsoil. I really hate companies that are like amway, which is the same sort of model as amsoil. Instead of selling thier product to retailers they sell to "dealers" which are just people who i guess pay to be amsoil dealers out of thier homes. Wacky man ! If you could get it at retailers i'd be using it all the time. I heard napa has it, or at least one person said they found it there. But there are no napas close to me.
 
NAPA as chain does not carry it. Some NAPA stores are dealers and carry it. There is a large automotive garage near me and they carry a full range of Amsoil products including motorcycle oil.
 
Hi, all, I really am amazed at how tricky it is to answer the oil question. I'm expecting arrival of my first Triumph on Wednesday, a 2001 Adventurer with 1209 miles on it. He just had it tuned up, had a sticky jet in one carb. So, I want to change the oil right away, maybe fork oil after that. The odd thing was, if I go to castrolmoto.com as in your link, do the Which Oil to Buy, I get a recommended oil of "Power 1 Racing 4T 10W-40", but when I go to Castrol.com, then Motorcycles, and do the Which Oil to Buy there, it tells me the recommended oil for the Adventurer is "Power RS 4T 10W-50". So which is it? Castrol apparently isn't sure. I just want a full synthetic. As this bike has, obviously, sat a lot, I want it to have some good oil in it right away.

went to the triumph party at mallory park race track (uk) whilst walking around we saw a stall for castrol oil and thought it funny as triumph recommend mobil.
on the stall we found a new recommendation guide.
triumph now recommend castrol for all their bikes. we asked the rep on the stall whats this all about and was told that triumph are switching to castrol and the oil for all moden triumphs is castrol power 1 racing 4t 10w-40.
this is a fulleysynthetic oil.
so we asked is it ok for new bikes he said we would be ok after the first service.
he did not say what was in it from the factory.

There are a lot of variables that go into deciding which oil is "right". Where you, ride, how you ride, ambient temps, etc. In my air cooled '03 Bonnie, I use fully synthetic 20W50. I ride a lot in urban traffic and in 90F + temps. In my Tiger 800XC which is liquid cooled, I use 10W-40 fully synthetic. I use fully synthetic oils that have a fully synthetic base and are motorcycle specific.
 
I have used Rotella as a substitute for the Mobil fully synthetic oil that was recommended by Triumph in 1996 when my Trophy was built.

Thanks, Carl, of course you're right, but I was just chasing around for the 'right' oil, and found three different 'official' recommendations. I saw an email returned to a BMW forum user from Castrol, they explained that UK/Europe is supplied by Castrol-Malaysia, Castrol US elsewhere, and that the 'official' Triumph recommendation for US users is Power RS 10W-50, in average conditions. I'd also read that Castrol had a flap about the base of their synthetic oils, won the right to call a mineral-based oil "synthetic" if satisfying other conditions. I don't know how old that is - maybe ancient - so I'll look into Power RS a little more, but I think I'm going to go with it. Amazon has 6 quarts for $45 shipped, that sounds competitive to me.
 
Many of the major brands use a mineral base, including Rotella. I use oils that have a synthetic base, Amsoil, Redline. I don't use Castrol because it has a mineral base. I do use Castrol mineral all in my '68.
 
After over 132,000 miles on my Trophy 1200 without a single problem, I've come to the conclusion that just changing the oil regularly, regardless of the brand, is more important than the type you use.

I'm in a quandary about using synthetics because of my short riding season.
I only use synthetic in my H***a but only rode it less than 1600 km's (1000 miles) this year.
Rather than drain out that relatively new and expensive oil this fall before storage, I decided to leave it in for the winter.
I use Motul in the T100 and Castrol in the vintage bikes. They also didn't get ridden enough this year to warrant a fall change, but I did it anyway.
 
I never used a synthetic oil in an air cooled bike after owning a H-D Heritage.....of course it's an air cooled engine and when I put synthetic oil in it, I noticed it ran much hotter.

Synthetic oil does not conduct heat as efficiently as does dino oil. That is the downside of it and it is why I use dino oil in my classic air cooled engine. Apparently, this is not a problem in modern air/oil cooled engines since synthetic is recommended by Triumph for the air/oil cooled twins. In fact, synthetic oil saved my engine when the oil pump gear broke.
 
Actually, after being convinced that I'd go with Castrol Power RS, I've come back around, I think I'll use the Amsoil 20W-50 in my Adventurer. The Seeker is right, of course, just changing it is most important, but I just wanted to know what is best, and I think it's important to change it out right away, as this oil is old and tired. I'll ask him if it's had any changes prior to this when he gets it here, but I want it to start out fresh regardless.
 
Changing oil regularly is a cheap way to preserve an expensive engine. I use Amsoil 20W-50 in my T100 and 10W-40 in my Tiger 800XC. I am going to change the oil in my Tiger this week.
 
I know Amsoil is really good stuff, they all probably are, but my main motorcycle helper, a a 35 year rider, Marine, meticulous type loves it, insists on it, and I have about 2/3 quart of it left from my Yamaha XT, so it should neatly cover an oil change with a gallon I can buy from the auto parts store in my neighborhood. I like giving the local guy business, and at $49.99 a gallon for Amsoil 20W-50, his price is in line with most I see out there. It's 5W off from the Triumph manual recommendation of 15W-50 full synthetic, but as Amsoil is a full synthetic and rated for wet clutches and such. I had already bought a Mobil 1 oil filter for synthetic oil, so I should be good to go. Then I'll start replacing any other fluids, like brake and clutch hydraulics, fork oil, whatever needs it. Thanks to all who've offered me, and others, help!

I try to use an oil that is easy to remove from the garage floor...WINK

Ain't that the truth!

Man.....I remember changing the oil in my Triumph TR-6 (car) once and not getting the canister oil filter seated properly. When finished I dropped the car down and started the engine. Watched the oil pressure gauge go from 0 to normal and then drop to 0 again. I quickly shut it down and looked underneath to find 6 quarts of racing oil on the cement floor. That took a long time to clean up!
