Thank you for the reply, and with this information I will keep Rpm @1000. I assume that more seat time on the America this will not remain a concern. My manuals, for my T100 and TBird, both say 1000 rpm, plus or minus 50. That plus 50 could be considered a safe adjustment range.
I think the stalling will clear out as you become more used to the coordination between the throttle and the clutch.
I'm reminded of when I had a friend visit me from Wisconsin, and we visited San Francisco. We both drove manual transmissions, but had different experience levels. So, as I was driving up Divisadero Ave. (steepest street in SF), and after each stop sign/signal, I was moving from the brake to the gas and foot off the clutch without ever rolling back more than 6 inches. After several blocks, I noticed he was white-knuckled and he asked me to go over to another street. He revealed he wouldn't even try the same because he was used to using the emergency brake on hills to avoid rolling back.
He had more time experience, while I had more actual experience...we have a lot of hills around here. Yes, the hills make me a little nervous, but I know I can handle them.
My Speedmaster is also set at the same 1000 rpm. I think once you get used to it you will not have a problem.
I have had this before, reach down the left side and adjust the idle knob, boost yourself a bit of RPM, you will be fine. I constantly am adjusting depending on altitude and weather. With engine idle on America @ 1000 rpm I sometimes stall the engine when leaving stops on steep Pennsylvania inclines. I welcome input as to a SAFE higher idle rpm on my Triumph America. Thanks in advance.
I need to introduce myself and make a correction: in 2011 I had a massive heart attack while at a golf course (loosing golf balls). While traveling back to Pennsylvania for the summer, the wife and I passed numerous couples on motorcycles between Florida and Pa.. I mentioned to my wife that I have never been on a motorcycle but, it seems as if I would enjoy riding. When I got back to Pa., I purchased a Suzuki 805cc Intruder (all controls easy to reach) with a wet weight of about 480lb. I sold it in 2021 and wanted something more substantial that the wind (from tractor trailer, etc.) would not effect my riding as much. Prior to returning to Florida I purchased the Triumph America, ( it’s a great bike for my stature @ 550lb ) and really enjoy riding through the mountains in western Pa. I purchased a 750 Vulcan to ride while in Florida but, it’s like riding on a pool table! your comments and input will undoubtedly make my riding more enjoyable…..I thank you for your tips and encouragement. With engine idle on America @ 1000 rpm I sometimes stall the engine when leaving stops on steep Pennsylvania inclines. Naw, I have ridden a America for 18 years. if the idle is too lowit will do it. You have to constantly adjust the idle knkob (on the air cooled carburated ones) depending on weather. I dont have a Tach on mine, but learned by ear over teh years whe its too low. It is a moderatly fast idle ing bike. 1000RPM ,, honestly im sitting a bit higher. The problem doesn't seem like an idle adjustment issue as a clutch issue. After all, when you take off, you're no longer at idle anyway. So either clutch management or possibly a cable adjustment.
