I barely caught the announcement on the radio news this morning, but I'm certain that I heard that the internet is 43 years-old today.
When I retired in December 1992 we had been using computer terminals in my office for many years but only to access the main computer for data access and input.
On the eve of my retirement there were big changes in computer technology and equipment coming down the line and I was somewhat thankful that I wouldn't have to go through that steep learning curve.
My adult children were into the internet and since I had just retired, they urged me to get a PC, but I wasn't the least bit interested in the internet. But I was doing a lot of writing using a typewriter so the idea of a PC word processor did interest me.
My daughter was dating a fellow who owned a small computer company and one day in the summer of 1993 they both showed up at my door with obsolete computer hardware; a monitor, keyboard and an out-of-date processor with barely enough HD to run itself. They hooked everything up, logged on for me and said, "This is what you do to surf the net, do email, etc."
I had a bit of a mental block about all that electonic technology and reluctantly had a go at it.
Well, that was all 19 years ago and the internet and email has changed my life in so many ways. It's such a big part of my life now that if the system is down or my PC is in the shop I almost have withdrawl symptoms :y2:
I know one thing for an absolute certainty, I would never have met any of you here and would never have enjoyed your friendship, information exchanges and humor.
Long live the internet!!!

Well I must admit I have never heard of internet day until today so this is what I found World Internet Day!

Looking back before we had internet I had a Bulletin Board running on a DOS system with one incoming line running a 1200 BPS modem (The speed of things back then) :y13: I used to load up a variety of shareware CD's on at a time mind you and people would dial in and download and upload software. We also had a mail system or I think it was those User Groups back then. We had a main system in town that that would download all the mail are news groups and we in turn would download from them and our members from us once again. At the time it was better than sliced bread you could communicate with people in other countries :y2:

Looking back and at where we are now it sure was a drop in the ocean as to where we are today. Like you Rocky if it were not for the internet we have today my communication with people outside my country would be so limited. What an amazing invention it has been and how it has changed the way we live our lives now

Yes Dave, even after all these years on the internet it still sometimes boggles my mind. The almost instant connection with folks on the other side of the world is truely amazing - as is the wealth of research information available on the web.
Before I wrote my post above I found that link you posted and found the info very interesting. It was the first time I heard of "internet day" too.
The first thing I do in the morning when I get up is switch on the PC and get my internet and email fix for an hour or so before breakfast :y13:
I'll never be as computer savvy as most of you guys, but I'm having fun :y2:

The internet has radically changed many, many things. I have certainly met a lot of really good folks online and in person as a result of the internet. Like Dave, I remember the days of bulletin boards - slow, slow, slow in retrospect.

Just being able to watch live feeds on news items is the one thing that you cannot substitute for anything, like now I can just log into Youtube and watch the latest news on Sandy. One wonders what it will be like in another 10 years or so.
