I barely caught the announcement on the radio news this morning, but I'm certain that I heard that the internet is 43 years-old today.
When I retired in December 1992 we had been using computer terminals in my office for many years but only to access the main computer for data access and input.
On the eve of my retirement there were big changes in computer technology and equipment coming down the line and I was somewhat thankful that I wouldn't have to go through that steep learning curve.
My adult children were into the internet and since I had just retired, they urged me to get a PC, but I wasn't the least bit interested in the internet. But I was doing a lot of writing using a typewriter so the idea of a PC word processor did interest me.
My daughter was dating a fellow who owned a small computer company and one day in the summer of 1993 they both showed up at my door with obsolete computer hardware; a monitor, keyboard and an out-of-date processor with barely enough HD to run itself. They hooked everything up, logged on for me and said, "This is what you do to surf the net, do email, etc."
I had a bit of a mental block about all that electonic technology and reluctantly had a go at it.
Well, that was all 19 years ago and the internet and email has changed my life in so many ways. It's such a big part of my life now that if the system is down or my PC is in the shop I almost have withdrawl symptoms
I know one thing for an absolute certainty, I would never have met any of you here and would never have enjoyed your friendship, information exchanges and humor.
Long live the internet!!!
