I've had a small problem with the seat on Black Betty not fitting like it should. I've tried raising and lowering the seat to try and fix this problem. Back when I was having the alternator problems I noticed something a little extra that was causing the actual fit issue, the seat pan is bent and is hitting the gas tank. This bend is the cause of my problems and it is slowly rubbing away at the gas tank.

I've attempted to heat the pan up to try and reshape it to allow for better fit but have been unsuccessful in the attempt. I'm afraid to apply too much heat as this might cause other issues with the seat pan. I've also looked at but haven't broke out the Drimel Tool to remove the bent area.

I've been searching for a replacement seat but all I've been able to locate were custom built seats complete with new seat pan or original replacement seats from Triumph. But being the cheap feller that I am, I couldn't see paying $300 to $900 USD for any of them. As luck would have it, I located some seats on eBay last week. One of them was a custom reworked original seat that looked like I would really enjoy but I'm cheap and wouldn't get into a bidding war over the seat as it did show some wear and I could be too sure how long it would last with the two wear areas the photos showed. There was another seat I was looking at but I had the closing bid date wrong and missed the auction by 6 hours. Should have bid on it early but I didn't. As luck would have it, the seat wasn't purchased and came back on the auction list and I bought it this time. I hope to have it here on Tuesday.

Since this is a newer seat, less than 6000 miles on it, it should be a better seat than my 42,000+ seat with the bent seat pan and the rip in the top seat cover.

Now to get to the point in this post. I was in the local Sam's Warehouse store a couple weeks ago and they had sheepskin rugs for approximately $39.00, I don't remember the exact price. The rug is large enough to make a couple seat covers so I have some extra if I should mess up the first attempt at making a seat cover. I'm looking at putting four grommets in the cover to fasten it to the bike and then using velcro straps to actually mount the cover. I'm still debating it it will be just a seat top cover or if I will have it also cover the sides of the seat too. I might just do one of each since I have enough material to work with. The cover will only be for the riders seat since I only ride solo.

I will grab photos along the way and post them once I get the project going. I think I will wait on the new seat instead of starting on the project this weekend.

Here's what I'm starting with...

New seat arrived today, found it when I got up this afternoon but didn't have time to do anything except open the box and check it out. That new seat looks soooooooooooo much better than the old one I don't know if I really want to hide it under a sheepskin. :y2: Hopefully I'll have a little time to play with it over my weekend (Thursday & Friday) and can get the project off to a good start.

The old seat...

It may not be easy to see but the problem causing the tank rub is in the upper part of this photo which is causing the rub on the tank and the corresponding rub on the seat pan...

I will get started on the sheepskin tomorrow or maybe next week, might have to try her out on a couple rides before making the cover. So far she sits better with the 6,000 mile seat versus the 46,000 mile seat.

I've either had a brain fart or I'm onto something with another mod. I took the seat bracket off the old seat so I'll have a spare should the need arise, the rest of the seat is headed to the dump.

As I was removing the mounting clips from the pillon seat I had the above mentioned mod idea. Keep the brackets in place and remove the seat covering. The pillon seat pan already has some tie-down points so why not use it as an additional rack mount. Instead of strapping items down on the new seat I'll build up a rack on the old pan and save the new seat from being destroyed. If I do it right I might even be able to work in a back rest for longer trips.

I've still got a little rig planning do do but I think it will work. I'll grab photos of the process or failure, which ever it turns out to be.

My mods have been put on hold for a little while but I hope to get started on them this weekend or next week. I need to find a grommet tool or run down to a saddle shop or boot repair shop and let them install the grommets.

I've been looking at ways to produce the new rack and I think I have worked out a plan to mount a plywood plate by using either PVC or copper risers to level the rack and then I will bolt the rack to the pan thru the risers.

Today was the first chance I had to try out the new seat. I couldn't believe the difference in feel of the seat as compared to my old seat which had 46,000+ miles on it. I'm really looking forward trying the new seat with the sheepskin pad.

The ride today was just a quick run to the barbershop for a hair cut. The barber is about 5 miles from the house so I should have had about 10 miles on the trip odometer when I pulled back in the garage but when I checked it I saw 142 miles on it. I wonder how that happened. Oh well, the seat felt great.

maybe someone went for a joyride while you were in the barber shop.:y2:

Oops. . . I forgot to get photos of it. FACE

The way I had mounted the sheepskin didn't feel secure and I took it off after testing it. I think what I'm going to do now is mount it to my ATV seat pad using Velcro strips as the fastening system. Now I've just have to go out and do it.

If you're going to mount it to your ATV seat prior to mounting to your bike,
cut the skin so you have enough to wrap it 3" or so around the edges of the
ATV seat and use heavy duty upholstery glue. That would do the trick for
sure. You can even add upholstery tables to the edges. If you're anticipating taking the skin off to clean, you might want to consider double sided Velcro.
