To be honest, if he had been waiting at the line as opposed to in the middle of the crossing, his bike would have been spared as well.
but apart from that, he was still fortunate.

Also he didn't have his helmet fastened, notice he just stepped away from the accident and pulled the hat off.

In China bikes are to filter to the front at intersections and wait in the lined areas so the rider was where he was supposed to be. This is thought to be the safest spot for the bikes, everyone knows where they are. While I have no first hand knowledge of this, one of my co-workers is from China and he has told me this in the past. When I showed him the video he stated again that the bikes are to filter to the front and wait at the light inside the motorcycle box which looks like a crosswalk.
