Tach From Speedmaster Into America

Hi all. I’ve been searching for a tach for Roy (2011 EFI America) for two and a half years but they’re no longer available new. I recently managed to find a used one. It’s been fitted and works perfectly.
Some bloggers have suggested that you need to remove sections of plastic from the tach to fit the plug on the wiring harness to it. I believed that advice and removed all of the plastic around the six terminals on the tach. Turned out that I didn’t need to. After getting the wiring harness from the bike that the tach was sourced from (an America) sent to me, I discovered that the standard America harness has a water/dust proof cap on the tach plug that removes easily to enable connection (see attached photos).
Might be handy information for anyone sourcing and fitting a tach in future.

Hi. I have sourced a Triumph tach along with the tank console. I have the connector on the bike that you show, but it doesn't appear that I have anything on the backside of the console that will plug into it. I am attaching photos. SInce you have done this already was looking for some insight possibly?

G’day, Gary. You have a carb model Speedmaster console, identifiable by the white face on the tach. I’m not entirely familiar with these - Roy is a 2011, EFI model. Does your tach have an electrical socket with 6 pins? Or does it look to be cable driven? (I can’t see in your photos)

Thank you kindly for responding, and so quickly! It is not cable driven, it has 2 separate plugs coming out of the tach which I am attaching photos. I have the same plug as you do underneath the console to receive the tach plug. They obviously are not compatible for some reason. I am assuming the EFI has the black faced tach?

I may have to continue to look for one with a compatible plug, I'm afraid. They are just so hard to find.

They have parts diagrams that may help. The main wiring harness on the America is identical to the Speedmaster. There are two different part numbers - T2501480 for vin up to 317246 and T2501490 for vin from 317247. Makes no difference, though, because the tacho harness for all carb-model Speedmasters (and, hence, Americas) is the same. The plug you have will join onto the main harness somewhere - it may have a blank protecting it from water and dust ingress. Take the tank off and look for a lead that goes nowhere. Whip the blank off and you should be good to go.

By the way, the small plug you have will probably be a separate lead. It’s for the tacho lighting.
In the efi models it’s one 6-pin plug.

Good Morning Hurtle,

So interestingly enough, the two male leads coming out of the harness fit the female leads coming out of the tach. I have one extra 2 pin lead coming out of the harness. I plugged them in but no luck. Even tried the the combination of changing out the two 2 pin leads, but still nothing. WIll continue to work at it and will remove the tank when I have a bit more time to do so. Thank you for the resources for parts and info and your knowledge. I've only had the bike since this summer and am new to the Triumph community.

I will post back when I figure out getting it all to work.

No problem, Gary.
Come to think of it, you shouldn’t have to take the tank off. Just removing the console should be enough to reveal the ends of the main harness near the top fork yoke. There’ll be a few spare terminal plugs around somewhere close.
