What (if anything) should I use on the threads of the (steel) exhaust pipe stubs when screwing them into the (alloy) head? The threads seem in reasonable condition - it will tighten up dry, but I don't want it to come loose again if that is avoidable.

I would appreciate the voice of experience here. Many thanks.

You can get a locktite product that is specifically for studs. I think it's purple but I'm not sure on that.
You can also damage the threads slightly on the studs, by pinching them in a vice or hitting them with a hammer. Not too much mind you, just enough that you can't turn them by hand.

If you do go the locktite route, make sure that you get one that is heat tolerable.

However, exhaust studs tend to corrode into place by themselves - but that takes a while, and you don't want to lose them before that happens.

STUBS mate, STUBS with a B - get it right!!! The parts book describes them as exhaust pipe adaptors, but the common description for the (Bonneville i.e.T140) fixing is 'over stub' (AGAIN WITH A B) so that's how I described them.

Scroll down to part # 70-9516 & 70-9516C

Exhaust port spigot. Threaded type. Fits 1971 and earlier models.

Exhaust port spigot. Converts push in heads to accept 650 pipes or any 1 3/4 inch OD headers. Fits 73 -78 and some 72 models. Steel.

OK they're known as spigots; my point was that the respondent referred to said parts as 'studs' when I used the term 'stubs'. The OED defines a spigot as 'a plain end of a piece of piping...' - I reckon that just about describes it. Thanks for all your help and guidance.

I hit a "d" instead of a "b". No need to get all testy about it.

Just trying to help you by giving you the common name for those things.

Ah, I c0cked up here - think i've caused all the confusion.

I thought Mike was on about studs into the cylinder for an exhaust flange.

These things can be called any number of names depending on the local lingo - and none of them would be wrong.
Stubs, studs, flanges, adapters, spigots, extensions, you name it.
But when you're dealing with an international audience it helps to use the parts book name.

That is exactly why I mentioned that MOST people call them "spigots"......because when you say "stubs", people will tend to confuse that (as Avion did) with "studs".

I only mentioned that in passing AFTER answering the question of what type of sealer to use because I realized there was some confusion about the part in question being an exhaust flange stud or a screw-in exhaust adapter (stub or spigot).
