I found that to be quite common when travelling in the U.S.

Dang, I was faster than I thought. Now I will have to change all my ride reports to reflect how fast I really was.

When I lived in the UK we gave directions with pubs. Turn right at the Black Bull, straight on past the King's Head, take the left just after the Red Lion and your destination is next to the Slug and Lettuce. This works especially well if your destination is, in fact, a pub.
Much easier than remembering street names or distances, and it works for both imperial and metric

Well I hope they also at least stop and have a drink at each pub seeing they being used as reference points
