Racing legend, Mario Andretti, was in town yesterday at the invitation of a local tire dealer who was celebrating selling Bridgestone and Firestone tires for 35 years.
Andretti has been a racing hero of mine for decades and I didn't even know he was coming to town. I would have stood in line to get his autographed picture and take some of my own. I only learned about his vist last evening on the 6:00 pm news.
I guess I'll have to start paying more attention to local news
As it turns out the Andretti family came to North America from Italy through Pier 21 here in Halifax before ending up in the USA.
Pier 21 is our version of Ellis Island in New York. My own mother and all of her family came to Canada from England through Pier 21 in the 1920's.
