Hi!
Can anyone help please?
I want to change the steering head bearings and races on my 1963 5TA,someone has obviously overtightened them in the past and completely mutilated the steering stem nut.
I have acquired a new nut but can't get the old one off,its nearly round.Does anyone have any suggestions. There is a rubber bung in the top of the nut and when you remove it you can see right the way down,I have tried lots of WD40 down the threads but to no avail,do you think it would help if I applied some heat down the centre?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Given that you have a new one and therefore damaging the old one isn't an issue, I'd firstly try a plumber's stilson (pipe wrench) using about 12 or 18 inches of leverage. At the same time as pulling on the stilson get a friend to hit the top of the nut with a hammer, that kind of impact with rotational pressure usually mover tight nuts.

Hi!
Thanks for the interest chaps,I had a man standing by with a mig welder today and a piece of steel pipe. We decided to have one more pull at it so we hammered a socket spanner on to the remaining bit of nut a piece of pipe as an extension and off it came.
Doesn't it make you look silly.
The next step was going to be the welding the pipe onto the nut.
Once again thanks for your interest and advice.
