For those that would like to use the SPOT system but don't want to purchase the system and you own an Android phone or tablet. . . Well there's an APP for that.

Short version:

If you have an Android phone or tablet (with gps), and would like the tracking/logging abilities of a SPOT, here is your app. You are not required to have cell service to "log" locations, they will be stored on your device until you have cell service or can connect to wifi, then they'll be uploaded to Spotwalla.

Long version:

Bubbler GPS is a secure personal location manager for Android phones and tablets, which allows you to store and share your travel memories via SpotWalla.com (http://SpotWalla.com/).

Whether you are riding the highways, exploring the back country, or are dipping your line in search of the big one, Bubbler GPS has you covered.

This version support track points, messages and pictures. The Pro version supports track points at a minimum of every 5 minutes, though 10 minutes is recommended.

*Please note* You MUST have "Web API" enabled for your "device" in SpotWalla.com to be able to use it with Bubbler GPS.

Please do not re-use an existing SpotWalla.com device, create a new one dedicated to Bubbler GPS.

To enable "Web API", go to http://SpotWall.com and log in. Select "Devices from the top. Create a new device with the "Bubbler GPS" device type. Once the device is created, click on the device you just created, and choose "Web API" from the menu that pops up. Choose "Enable".

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the developer at [email protected]. He will work with you to resolve any issues you may have. He has added support documentation and information on their Facebook page. Be sure to visit the notes section. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bubbler-GPS/152704604887532

Please contact him at [email protected] for assistance, prior to leaving any negative feedback. He will get back to you as soon as possible and get your issue resolved. Thank you.

*Note* If you have the lite version of Bubbler GPS installed, please uninstall that version before running the Pro version.

I am involved with testing Bubbler, and am very pleased with it, and with the developer. Bubbler is not a replacement "pound for pound" for a SPOT device, since you're using a cellular device vs. a satellite based device. That having been said, Bubbler, in conjunction with Spotwalla, offers features that many will find appealing; multiple messages with Bubbler specific icons on the Spotwalla maps, direct linking/uploading of photos with locations/messages, and no subscription fees to SPOT.

From the developer:

The application itself is built with long distance riding in mind. We made the buttons for common functions extra large for example so you can use them with your gloves on (while stopped of course, if your phone works with your particular brand of gloves). If you think something needs to be bigger, smaller or just different, let us know! We believe that documenting fuel stops is about efficiency, not fumbling with phones. It may look a little odd when you are sitting in your chair at home, but try and remember warmer weather, and beautiful rides, with a helmet on at some gas station in the middle of nowhere. That's how we built it. The text on the website is extra large as well in an effort to make it a little more readable from your phone since many of us are regular travelers.

Another feature, which may take some getting used to, is that we have made the app really hard to kill/close (hopefully). We want your mind focused on your ride, not if you left the Bubbler home screen open or not before your screen went blank, or you "backed out" too far. To stop the application, you must go to the home screen of the app, and hit the menu button on your phone. This will pop up a menu and you will have to choose "Stop All Processes". This action will stop Bubbler and all related processes. Bubbler will not restart until you click the icon for the app again. If you just want to pause your track being sent for a little bit, or overnight, or at work, or when you battery is low, you can simply turn off the gps feature of your phone and no locations will be logged until you turn it on again. We ONLY use gps for locations. This gets rid of the "mystery locations" that Latitude users may have experienced. There are several "widgets" available for android phones to allow you to turn wifi and gps on and off easily without digging into settings. This is a good battery saving measure when indoors. Most GPS software works extra hard when indoors to achieve a lock. This can effect battery life significantly.

If you don't understand something in settings, or other locations in the app let us know! Our idea is for quality applications to be self explanatory as much as possible, you shouldn't need a manual. Programmers are not real good at this sometimes, we will apologize for that in advance...

The app was designed to continue to work while in "Flight Mode" to minimize battery usage. It will not actually update your positions in SpotWalla.com however until you turn "Flight Mode" off AND have either WiFi or Cellular internet access.

A Facebook page for Bubbler GPS has been created for those of you who do that kind of thing. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bubbler-GPS/152704604887532?ref=ts&fref=ts

For the record, the current differentiation between the two versions are as follows:
Lite / Pro
5 queued points / 1500 queued points
Minimum 15 minute track interval / Minimum 5 minute track interval
No camera / Camera

For more information on the SPOT device and how it works see http://www.findmespot.com/en/ There is also accessories to link other smart phones but so far I've only seen the Android APP that appears to bypass the need for the accessory equipment to connect to the SPOT.

It appears the biggest difference in the accessory and the APP is that the APP doesn't send signals when there is no phone service whereas the accessory still uses satellite communications and would have more access to assistance than the APP would.
