Students celibration.

My own dream is to ride Norway ... to Lofoten. That is totally possible ... first to Sweden via car ferry and then ride to Norway. Those who have seen last James Bond film might recognize this road. My Triumph will fit to trip like that clearly better than my ex. ''cruising'' Moto Guzzi.

I don’t know how I missed the post on Norway, great road. For others Vappu May 1st a student celebration day and workers as well. Hence graduates wear their white hats or a top hat if they have doctorate. Interesting custom.

Finland looks a lot like Northern Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. My ancestors came from Finland in the 1800's, and settled in Northern Minnesota. Probably because it reminded them of Finland!
Well hello cousin! LoL. I read somewhere years ago all people descended from Finn share a subset of common ancestors.

I read human ancestors were down to six breeding pairs at one point way back. So we're all related.
Yes, that is definitely true as well. The further we go back we are all related. I think the Finnish one was about all Finns having a group of common ancestors about 4000 years ago. Beyond that we are all cousins at some point.

Well, I'm pretty ''bad'' Finn. My father's roots comes from Scania/Skåne. His ''DNA'' will remind more average Dane from Copenhagen than average Swede from Stockholm. Originally Scania was part of Denmark, not Sweden. My mother is Swedish speaking Finn, but hers ancestors can be tracked back to 17th century as they arrived from Sweden to Finland (genealogy study is one of hers hobbies). For sure, she has some western Finns blood too. And I'm outcome of them. But I know what SISU is ...

Back to the topic. One popular road in North is to ride from Finland to Norway and via Kautokeino to all the way Alta (so called Old Post Road). Lots of old gravel roads for rides. Adventure riders likes this. I would like to try that one day.

@Arctic Fox , my wife told me y’all are getting some snow in Finland next week, ”takatalvi”. Sounds like a slight delay in the riding season. When is the normal riding season usually start?

As you know, Finland is long country (South to North). There are also always more snow on Eastern Finland vs on Western Finland. For sure there are most snow in the North (Lappland). So where you live will influence. Having some new snow end of March can not yet be called as Takatalvi. If the same will happend seconf half of April, then maybe.
Generally speaking you will see first bikes in the beginning of May (if the weather has been warmer than normally). Most of the riders will start to ride 2. half of May.

It is good to understand that outside temperature still is not the only matter. After winter our roads used to be ''dirty'' (there are some dust and sand on the roads). The studded car tires (winter time) also makes surfaces of roads bit bad shape. That will put us waiting for bit longer.

Ever miss Finland?
