On April 3rd, 1973, Motorola engineer Marty Cooper placed the first public call from a cellular phone.
That first cell phone call was made to one of Cooper’s rivals, Joel Engel at Bell Labs.

Cooper simply said, “Joel, this is Marty. I’m calling you from a cell phone, a real handheld portable cell phone.”
The call was placed on a Motorola DynaTAC 8000x, the iconic “retro” cell phone. The DynaTAC 8000x weighed in at a whopping 2.5 pounds compared to today’s feather light devices.
As part of the 40th anniversary, Cisco put together an infographic (below) that highlights some of the milestones that got us from Cooper’s first call to today’s Google Glass and beyond.
