If he means that his '71 has the flat back style, then I doubt that a sealed beam unit will fit it (being too deep), but I am not 100% sure of that. I really don't know how deep exactly those flat back style buckets are.

I think he will have to get another headlight bucket and adapt it to his bike. But I have never tried to fit a sealed beam into the flat back style.

I agree with Carl, and have never tried to fit one either, but I don't think a sealed beam will fit.
I know they will fit inside the standard buckets as my BSA had one in it when I bought it.

I have put sealed beams in standard buckets. When I took long trips, I would put a sealed beam in to eliminate having to carry a spare headlight bulb (or two). The stock headlight bulbs are plenty bright. But they could be hard to find to find in rural areas. The sealed beams seemed to be less susceptible to vibration.

A 7" Sealed Beam fits my '79 Bonny perfectly. I use a High Performance Sylvania Hallogen Seal Beam. I still plan on trying the HID Xenon units which are a step up at some point in time.
