I was just wondering.....

Here in S.A. a passenger vehicle has to be inspected and certified whenever it changes hands. In England, the rule is inspection and cert' every year.

What about other countries?????

Here it is up to each state as to how they enforce road worthiness. Some states have vehicle inspections and some don't. Florida does not. Here, if a LEO sees something amiss, a head light out, a tail light out, bald tires, etc., he/she can make a traffic stop and issue a citation giving the driver 48 hours to get it fixed. The driver must take the vehicle to the LEO office and prove that the repair(s) was made. If the driver fails to do so, the state confiscates the license plate of the vehicle.

Well here they can stop you and take your vehicle off the road until you have it passed again by a roadworthy station. Some of the vehicles you find riding around are in a shocking state of repair

As Carl said, each State has it's own laws pertaining to roadworthiness.

Here in Pennsylvania, we used to have to get all motor vehicles inspected twice a year.

They have now reduced that to once a year and that corresponds to the date at which your license plate expires (we have to renew our registration yearly).

The State has official inspection stations and when you pass the inspection, your vehicle gets a new inspection sticker which has to be displayed in a certain area. On a motorcycle, it goes on the front left fork so a cop can ride by you and see it. The stickers are color coded so they can tell from a distance if the color is correct and know immediately.

If you look at the photo of my T14V below, you'll notice a purple/blue sticker on the bottom of the fork with the number 8 on it....meaning it expires in August of each year.

over here its a yearly m,o,t test which lasts for a year ,but you are still responsible for the road worthieness of your bike or car.
so if you get stopped and have any faults you get an on the spot fine and 7 days to put it right !
if you get pulled and you have no tax or have no mot , or insurance ether one is enough to have your bike confescated and crushed !

They simply can't confiscate your vehicle here for any reason other than if you were using it in the trafficing of drugs.

I should have mentioned also that you are required to show proof of insurance as well as valid ownership (a current registration - which means you paid the bean counters their annual fee) anytime you are stopped by the cops. But the cops have to have a valid reason to stop you, they can't just do it because they feel like it. You either have to have something not working (like a burned-out bulb) or you've committed some sort of violation (illegal passing, speeding, etc.).

Of course you can be stopped for things that look un-roadworthy even after you've passed an inspection.

Here a LEO can impound your vehicle for any number of reason; but they cannot confiscate it unless you were using it to commit a felony: drugs, robbery, etc. Confiscation has to be approved by a judge in conjunction with the outcome of the criminal trial.

You can lose your vehicle, boat, ATV etc. for illegal hunting. We caught two poachers on the preserve, hunting at night. They lost a two year old pickup truck, boat, motor and trailer, and an ATVs well as their firearms. They also got 18 months in the state penitentiary and a healthy fine. We were waiting on them.

I've had a bike taken off the road for a 'dirty' numberplate.
They wanted the disc but it was in one of those Oxford disc holders that need a few tools to take out. B@stards.

I've noticed when reading UK magazines that the guys are often after road legal silencers to get through the MOT. Once through do they put the off road silencers on again?
What happens if they get pulled for noisy pipes? Is it just a fine or points or go back to get another MOT?

...

Over this a way (Australia) we have 7 states or territories, each have small variations on the subject. My state NSW (New South Wales) requires annual inspection after the first 5 years. Once a bike is 5 years old, it's tyres and noise that they look for. With cars it's the same but they do an electronic brake test. We also have to supply 3 rd party personal insurance papers before rego is issued. Property insurance isn't compulsory but I figure it's important in case I crash into a Bugatti Veyron.
AJ that T140V is special, congratulations. Now if only it had right foot change:y15:.

We have no inspections yet. We can also be pulled over and have to have registration and insurance paper. The Mexicans just run away and leave the car if they have a crash.
