Former President George HW Bush was my Commander-in-Chief. I watched the funeral yesterday and the services today. I had great respect for him as a man and as a leader. As a soldier, I had confidence in him. He was a WWII vet and had lost a child. He knew what it was to risk one's life and suffer personal loss. He supported his troops. Something I cannot say about his successor. I was proud to serve under him.
As a senior noncommissioned officer, i watched the precision of the honor guard and the pall bearfers. They did their jobs flawlessly. I have been involved in many military funerals: as a member of the firing squad, a pall bearer, and noncommissioned officer in charge. I have been involved in funeral for a two star general - but never for a Commander-in-Chief. The one one detail I never did was as a bugler playing taps. The Army was smart enough not to let me near a musical instrument!
The Military District of Washington DC in in charge of all of funerals for presidents and VIP's in the the capitol area. For presidents, vice presidents, and other VIP's, the military detail is a joint service detail consisting of members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard - all of the US uniformed services. These guys and gals rehearse continuously and if you saw any of the services for President Bush, their dedication and practice shows.
George HW Bush was a member of the greatest generation as was my dad. He is the last President of the US of the greatest generation. President Bush, thank you for your service to our nation. Rest in peace, Sir. SALUTE
