Hi Guys,
I am thinking of fitting some crash bars to my 800 Roadie, and have heard some horror stories about the bars being bolted directly to the engine casings. This would seem to defeat the object of the bars if the engine cases can be damaged as a result of a crash.
Is there any bars that just mount to the frame/engine mountings?
All the ones I have seen, even the genuine Triumph ones bolt to the engine.
Any advice appreciated.

I have the Triumph engine bars and I like them. I have tested them four times and they work well with no engine damage. :D The ones that you heard damaged the engines have been redesigned. They did, indeed, damage the engines.

Those are the ones. I am home for this week and my Tiger is in Ontario; so I can't get a pic. Here is a pic from my album.

Steve. . . As Carl said, there has been a redesign of the aftermarket Tiger engine guards. Not all have been redesigned but I would say most have been. I have a redesigned set of Givi guards on mine. Here is a photo of the Givi part number, the key here is the "A" in the part number. I've seen others that mount the same but since they came out later I haven't done much reading on them. I could be wrong but I don't think I've ever seen a report of the Triumph guards causing the damage of the earlier aftermarket guards.

I have posted information on my guards here. . . How To Set Up Your 800 Xc, Or Not | Page 2 | Triumph Motorcycle Forum - TriumphTalk with additional information on the next page.

I have never seen a report of the Triumph guards causing any damage. Earlier 3rd part guards DID cause damage; but as Tony and I said, these have been redesigned.

Thanks guys, They both look very good. The fitting of top mounting on the Givi sound 'interesting'!
As I don't go off road I am leaning toward the Triumph ones purely on looks.
Decisions, decisions!

Steve, to be completely honest, I wanted the Triumph guards but was looking when the first reports of the issues were just hitting the different forums. A quick search showed the factory bars had the same lower mounts as the aftermarket bars. As I said, I had and still can't remember hearing of any issues with the factory guards but I wasn't sure at the time if I wanted to go with those mounts. I have a theory of why the problem occurred but I have no proof from a design/engineering stand point. My theory is the Triumph guards were designed to provide the protection using the mounting points and the aftermarket thought along the lines. . . "Well, Triumph designed theirs to mount here, must be the proper location." What I think is the additional force/torque put on the mounts with the "larger" guards is actually what causes the aftermarket guards to damage the bikes.

So long story short, Triumph did their homework, the aftermarket was looking over Triumphs shoulders and cheated off the Triumph design papers. They got caught and are now trying to protect themselves by actually doing their own work. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. . . YMMV :)
