Take it from a muso with over 40 years experience (me) Get a Strat BUT make sure it's an American Strat. They are made in Japan and Mexico too! They are great guitars but are not the same quality as an American made Strat. You will pay more for it but you get what you pay for. Gibson are also a great chioce... An SG series would be a great starter...
I have a Fender Telcaster vintage series, a Gison SG200 custom and a Yamaha SG500 (Carlos Santana style). A good amplifier is also a must for the serious guitarist and I can reccommend Fender, Peavey, Vox and Marshall. They need to be "Tube" amps.. ie, not solid state. If he's into the R&R and blues stuff, he will need a tube amp. They overdrive really well and give a brilliant sound. Solid state is too clean a sound and he will soon get over it.
Good luck and if ya need any assistance with stuff, let me know...
