The USA Hockey Sled Classic will be held in Pittsburgh this weekend, featuring 14 teams affiliated with NHL franchises -- including Pittsburgh’s “Mighty Penguins.â€
The tournament will start Thursday and be played throughout the weekend at Harmarville-Bladerunners and RMU Island Sports Center.
Championship games in three divisions will be held Sunday at CONSOL Energy Center between 11:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.
Sled hockey gives physically disadvantaged individuals a chance to compete on the ice against teams from other cities. In addition to NHL affiliations, two teams taking part in this weekend’s tournament are made up of disabled veterans of the U.S. armed forces.
The Mighty Penguins will be play three games in the first three days against other NHL-affiliated sled hockey teams – Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against Colorado at Harmarville-Bladerunners; Friday at 2:30 p.m. against Philadelphia at Harmarville-Bladerunners; and Saturday at 11 a.m. against Buffalo at RMU.
Admission to all games is free.
On Saturday night, the U.S. Paralympic Men’s Sled Hockey Team – which will compete in the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia in March – will be at RMU Island Sports Center to meet fans and sign autographs from 5-7 p.m.
